I think sex is the best time to forget seeking intelligence validation.... be animalistic and let it all go!  [8D]

This appears to be impossible for some posters !

Got so excited when I read bits of the references that I had to return here and say
was I right after all on the male Warrior thread ?

However I actually believe that IQ tests are not accurate pointers to potential creative capacity. Just my opinion based on experience, for Filo's info !

WhipTheHip -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 5:19:53 AM)

According to Paul MacLean humans have three brains: the archipallium, the paleomammalian brain, and the neopallium.
The neopallium contains our intelligence, and the more primitive, reptilian archipallium produces our sex drive.
Each brain of our brains has its own agenda and fights for control.

meatcleaver -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 6:03:47 AM)

I remember the first IQ test I took when I was a child, I was apparently somewhat less intelligent than next door's dog. I was thinking they were trick questions because they were so easy. Understanding how they work helps so my IQ rose by a remarkable level over night. However, I was the only one in my class that instinctively understood perspective at such a young age. It all depends what you are measuring and why, tests never cover all the bases.

philosophy -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 6:18:00 AM)

IQ tests measure only what the person who formulates the test considers as IQ. As IQ itself is a moving target, it follows that IQ is not a realistic or useful measurement of anyones mentation. One of the most accurate IQ tests i ever came across was the Goodenough Draw-a-Man IQ test. (you couldn't make that up). It asked its subjects to simply draw a man, then the drawing was compared against a check list; 2 points for fingers, 2 more if there were 4, 2 more if a thumb as well...that sort of thing. It gave a remarkably interesting set of results which seemed to  correlate with our (admittedly small) test groups educational attainments. However, as there are many intelligent people without formal qualifications, clearly it is still a flawed test.
If an IQ test is desgined by a man, then women will get a slight bias against them in the results...and vice versa. Which brings  me to my final point.......of what use is an IQ score? does it really measure anything worth measuring? Are those who rely on it as a measure of someones intelligence missing the fundamental point?

LadyEllen -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 6:55:07 AM)

IQ tests only measure certain things which are not necessarily pre-requisites to achievement or (shudder at the idea of agreeing with seeks) creativity. And, one's result will vary according to the type of questions and which form of IQ is being measured.

Somewhere I have one of Eysenck's "know your own IQ" books. This gives a number of IQ tests, each designed to measure a form of IQ - mathematical, logical, verbal etc. On each test, I got a different score - mathematically I was average, whilst in terms of verbal ability I was a genius - which backs up evidence about brain sex differences between male and female.

If we gave everyone on the planet the verbal ability test only, then I suspect males would come out as average whilst women scored highly. If we gave everyone the mathematics test only, I suspect the reverse would apply.

If it were possible to produce a single IQ test which gave equal emphasis to all types of intelligence, then I suspect men and women would score equally on average. The problem is, those devising tests will probably tend to affect the outcome by favouring question types the solution to which they perceive as best evidence of intelligence.

No, but you might be interested in what I just posted there.

Incidentally, one of the measures of intelligence must be that one learns from one's mistakes. Irony - I-R-O-N-Y

LOL - couldnt resist it!

That shudder wasn't because of your agreement with me Lady E, it was me reaching out over cyber space and in a quantum physical way manipulating your twiddly bits.   lol

Lady E; I shall have to go and make a nice cup of tea before digesting that little lot in the post <over there>. You are not protesting to much are you. I think you are very bright Lady E: I really do.

meatcleaver -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 7:05:52 AM)

My daughter informed me the other day that women on average speak 5,000 words a day and men 1,000. Though thinking of the women I'm in contact with daily that seems an under estimate.

If intelligence is as much about a procreation strategy as a survival strategy etc, then it figures that the sexes will have different aptitudes in different areas because they follow different strategies in order to procreate.

Women actually only speak 1000 words a day too - its just they have to say everything at least five times before a man will listen!

Oooo! That hurt!

juliaoceania -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 8:25:26 AM)

The only reliable method of testing for intelligence is to test for memory.

I have a fairly high IQ (not genius level, but the few 'geniuses' I have known make me happy that I am not one...like my brother who is so brilliant he is half crazy), but I do not think that IQ tests measure everything about intellect.

I find the Western IQ test to be skewed by cultural bias. If it cannot accurately measure IQ cross culturally it is invalid as far as I am concerned. In order to be a scientific measure of intellect cultural differences should not matter....

Just my opinion based upon looking at these things from a cross cultural perspective. I wrote a paper that referenced some of these points because certain ethnicities score lower on IQ tests. It is not that they are less intelligent, it is the fact that theses tests were deveoped by White men...smiles

pinkee -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 8:53:41 AM)

what difference would it make if someone could prove men perform better "on average" than women on IQ tests?  and how would that affect anyone's sexuality?  pinkee

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 8:55:53 AM)

I think sex is very intelligent.

Actually it's more like saying those 1,000 words five more times in a series of "it doesn't matter what I said, it's what I meant that matters", LOL  [:D]

juliaoceania -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 11:14:44 AM)

This is a troubling thing for me, because all the men in my life talk more than I do with the exception of my son.. he only grunts 10 words a day.

NastyDaddy -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 11:18:41 AM)

Don't be troubled, work out a compromise... how many words do you grunt per day?  Surely a happy medium can be achieved.

cuddleheart50 -> RE: "Sex and Intelligence" (9/14/2006 4:12:59 PM)

I bet I dont speak 1000 words a  day, in person I am very quiet.  And when I do speak, everyone knows that I have something important to say.
