MIslostsoul -> Time Magazine article on BDSM (9/17/2006 5:49:38 PM)

I don't know if anyone has seen this article ( did a seach and didn't find a thread on here).

I like it but some of it also bothered me so here is a link.

I think the attempt to even try and be even-handed in the article is a step forward.

Not sure I think that particular couple is a good model of the community but they are themselves. I just wish the interviewer had met a few more families living the Ds life on a daily basis.

Of course whom among us would have volunteered to be those others interviewed?

After reading the artical myself I agree they maynot be the best role models but far from the worse either. And at least they had the guts to stand for thier beliefs. I am one that does not hide who or what I am . My family knows and it has cuased some to shun me and others to embrace me. But I can only be who I am. At the same time I am sacure enough that I do not needs to use who I am as a shock facter either. I do believe that education of the lifestyle is key to our exceptance in the world. But am not nieve in thinking we will ever fully be embraced either. Thier will always be those that will shun and persacute the differant.

The author did mostly try to keep things level, but also concentrated on parts that they found somewhat 'out of the norm'.  Rather than stating something and passing on it, repeated inflection makes someone (a vanilla, for instance) to consider it more thoroughly and ultimately might make them find themselves uncomfortable.

As the others have stated, the couple handled their business well, but might not be the best choice.  Better than the cast of Springer, though.

I don't know if I would ever be found by documentarians, but I think that I would do a creditable job of doing the Lifestyle justice, partner or no.

Interesting read, thanks for the posting and web address.

They couldve focused more on the aspects of self exploration, kink and growth in a positive light. I give it 2 out of 5 stars. typical vanilla

Ebonflame -> RE: Time Magazine article on BDSM (9/25/2006 7:42:30 PM)

I'm fairly new to this, but I think it was rather good for a media coverage.  I mean, it wasn't 'oh my god they're insane,' and it wasn't sarcastic (such as 'we should all try this!  It might be the best thing we ever did).  Granted, the magazine it was published in IS a fairly decent magazine, but still, I have to agree with thetammyjo in saying it's a step up - a far cry from most of what you'll get from Googling 'BDSM' or 'Sado-Masochism'.

interesting...thx for the read, i thought it was pretty well done considering the medium

Unfortunately, I think it's another example of typical stereotyping.  I had no idea what real BDSM was until I actually started asking questions.  I mean hard core questions.  I think a better person to do an article like that would be someone actually heavily involved in the scene.  I think I've gotten more information from this website than anything else but mostly because it's just talking to people that live it.

exactly,   A reporter was at FetishCon in Tampa and interviewd and spent time with someone who was a playpartner of another friend of ours.  She gave the reporter the name of our friend, she spent several days taking with him and letting him take pictures (attention whore, lol) then our phone rings.  We declined.

I was glad the writer chose an everyday couple. An interview with a longtime BDSM activitist might have been more accurate, but Doc and Surri made the lifestyle accessible.

It was like peaking into the window of the friendly neighbors next door. The couple reinforced what many of us have said for years: BDSM is only twisted in the most fun and fascinating ways.
