NakedOnMyChain -> A Ramble On Epitome (9/18/2006 6:17:36 PM)

It's that time of year again.  Fall is in the air, at least where I am.  There is something about this season that makes me nostalgic.  It puts me in a beautiful, but dark frame of mind.  Indescribable and unusual, really.

My question for you is do any of you get into that frame of mind from time to time?  The kind that makes you believe that the little epitomes can be realized, that some kind of dark magic is lurking just around the corner if only you can jump out and surprise it.  It's moods like these that strike me as utterly beautiful, utterly sexy... the kind that make you want to walk a dark, treelined avenue on a cool night listening to "Disintegration" by The Cure.

For some reason certain music is always a trigger, and right now I'm listening to the soundtrack to Donnie Darko, and that's a surefire way to get there.  "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and "Under the Milky Way" by The Church are enough to send me into a transcendent train of thought.  It's almost like a different way of viewing the world.  It makes the air crackle with some kind of strange, exciting electricity.  It makes the mundane extraordinary.

Thanks for letting me ramble.  As Lucky always says, if you have to ask, "Is it just me?" the answer is always, unequivocably, "No".  But sometimes it's nice to have some reassurance that someone else can feel the magic in life.

There are certain things that remind me of my childhood (and mostly that is a good thing!).

A bright hot cloudless day with the smell of pine needles makes me think about running around in the mountains

The smell of cedar reminds me of my childhood treehouse

Windy roads remind me of my dad's crazy ass driving...smiles

There is a street I walk every morning for exercise that reminds me of walking home from school as a kid and I often contemplate that, and I think it is because of the tree species on this street are not indigenous to the area I currently live.

It sure ain't fall in Austin yet, still in the 90s here.

Vendaval -> RE: A Ramble On Epitome (9/19/2006 9:03:49 AM)

Definately.  I love the transitional seasons of spring and autumn,
the crispness of the air, the chill of the wind, the Wheel of the
Year turning.  Mabon is next week and Samhain is next month,
I love the winter Holly Days and the old traditions.   [sm=mrpuffy.gif]

Blessed Be,

oh my god, isn't disintegration the best album ever ever ever!

KenDckey -> RE: A Ramble On Epitome (9/19/2006 10:18:08 AM)

I hate it when it gets cold.   Yes I have lived in the snow (nasty white stuff).  I hate it when I have to remember that the time zones change again and my sons availability goes into a different time (we dont do daylights saving time here).   I hate it when the leaves fall,   Yes they can be pretty but it is such a huge mess to  pick up.  Thank God for Cactus.   you don't have to worry about that.

Hi "mom" [:D]. I'm glad all went well with bringing your son into the world.

As for your OP.... oh yes, I get in "that frame of mind" frequently. Certain songs, streets, times of the day and year... well, nothing I can write does it justice, so I'll leave it at that.

SirKenin -> RE: A Ramble On Epitome (9/19/2006 7:37:35 PM)

Actually for some reason around this time every year I have a hard time.  I do not know what it is about it.

siouxie -> RE: A Ramble On Epitome (9/19/2006 7:40:17 PM)

hmmm.. i love this time of year, but i always struggle with my own ambivalence as autumn time approaches. i get torn between two halves of myself.

The smell of Halloween is almost in the air.  It definately is an energizing time of year for me.

So, whats everyone doing?  Or is it too early for most to ask that?

Oh, it's never too early to ask that!  LOL.  I start prepping in August, usually.  This year I'll be doing the usual, having a gigantic party on the Saturday closest to Halloween.  This year's is music themed.  I'm going as Slash.  Rock n' roll!  What are your plans for the big event?

Thank you Level, by the way.  [:)]  And I agree.  Words can't do that particular feeling justice.  I always get a bit frustrated trying express it.

And, siouxie, "Disintegration" is definitely the best album ever.  Ever.  Ever.  Period.

Huh. I usually have a hard time early in the morning, around 5:30, 6.[8|]

It's the smell of falling leaves that triggers that sublime fall feeling in me, the sound of them skittering down the street. Makes me want to go out and take long walks.

Unfortunately I assocciate it with 70's easy listening, top 40 pop - that's usually what I was listening to when raking them in my youth - Carpenters, etc.

Weird here though, two nights ago, it was in the Fifties, yesterday 40, this morning, 31 - we may skip fall this year and go straight into winter.

Back in the 70's by afternoon though, and we usually have a last, glorious Indian summer. I'm not too worried, though this does happen every so often.

Sounds like Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I love the fall (except for the pollen that continues to linger in the air).

Some things that are exceptional:  warm apple cider with cinnamon sticks, bonfires, football, shorts & sweatshirts, backpacks & kids returning to school.  Days that are no longer hot, but comfortably warm, leaves falling from trees.

I can't prep the way I normally do.  I'm in the middle of a move.  Packing and painting..and other stuff.
Though, we have been invited to 2 parties so far.  However by the time halloween comes I may just be happy to open the door dressed up in my new home.
Much lower key than normal but its an odd year.
What about everyone else?
