I was wondering what length of ropes I should buy for a first time doing bondage

akisha -> RE: beginning bondage (9/22/2006 3:30:46 PM)

It would totally depend on what you are using the ropes for.

Are you doing rope dresses?
Are you doing intricate Japanese Rope tieing?
Are you just using it to attach to the wrist and ankle cuffs to the bed or to hooks in the ceiling or walls?

What Sir buys for us is usually the soft white braided 1/4" rope in lengths of 50 feet and 100 feet. It's about $8 for 50 feet.

But really you need to know what you are doing with it to decide how much you need. I think Sir has 3 50ft ropes and 1 100 ft rope at the moment.

As well as 4  lengths at about 6 ft long just for attaching to the restraints with latch hooks on the ends for tieing down.

We use the 50 ft sections for rope dresses and such things, with lots left over but you can knot it up to look pretty.

Dear MD-

My basic rack consists of a fifty foot length, cut in half, one half of that cut in half, and one half of that cut in half. That leaves you with a twenty five foot, a twelve foot, and two six footers. That should be a good start.

I'd recommend either 1/4 in (6mm) or 5/16 (8mm) Nylon Braid, as one can find in any hardware store. Don't forget a good pair of shears for cutting it in an emergany.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

I buy rope in 100 foot lengths from Home Deport. Cut in half  (50') than cut remaining section in half again (25') cut remaining length in half again forming two (12') lengths. Cut one section in half again forming two (6' sections. I wraP braded fishing line on the ends, coil each section and secure with cable ties. Next wash coils in washing machine adding fabric softner, Let dry tha nif desired they can be dyed various colors (follow instructions on bottle). P.S. I buy soft white braided 3/8" rope.

I buy 100' rope, cut it in half (50') then in half again (25') then third one of those.  Each third I then halve, and halve again.  The other 2 25' pieces I halve twice, then cut into 5, and tie to the original half halves of the third.  I then halve that, and third each part of that.  I take all the pieces, cut them into 17, dye them in random colours, wait for someone to get married, and use it all as confetti.

Yours,

benji

Naaaaaa,
Kmart has 3/8 - 50' for like $4.99 I buy 2.
I do exactly what Topcat does with one 50 footer then I just cut the other in half.

Make sure you burn the ends so they don't unravel.

First time bondage?

Forget the rope and go with more simple and faster bondage gear. Cuffs, ace wrap, duct tape, plastic wrap, and spacer bars are great for starting off with. Most are easy to put on and can come off fast should there be any problems.

Start off with the easy stuff and build up to rope after a few learning skills on knot tieing and design.

iowastud -> RE: beginning bondage (9/23/2006 6:06:49 AM)

i agree with fangsnfeet. should start with something easy to get out of and work your way up to the rope. i buy most of my rope from the bdsm web sites. lots of colors to choose from.

PlayfulOne -> RE: beginning bondage (9/23/2006 6:21:45 AM)

I would agree with Fangs,  start learning the techical pints of rope bondage, but find a few easier things to start with.  Cuffs and chains will allow you to get into your scene quicker, especially while you are in the learning stage.  Depending on the level of relationship of the person you are working with that can really have an impact on the evening.  Someone you are involved in an ongoing relatinship with may have the patience to serve as a model while you fumble your way thru trying something, someone your "playing" with for the evening may lose patience and start doubting if you actually know what your doing.

So far the advice is 100' of rope which is next to useless for most people and don't bother with rope at all.

Well, here is my advice.  Four short lengths about five feet long.  This makes it easy to tie someone to a bed or an object.  A twenty foot length would serve to do simple rope dresses.

Buy a copy of Screw the Roses as it has the best short summary of bondage and is a good all around reference.  Midoris book is good as well.  As much as I adore Jay his bondage book is 1/3 prattlings about safety, the other 2/3s doesn't cover too much more than Screw the Roses he just takes forever explaining it.

PONYSEEKER -> RE: beginning bondage (9/25/2006 12:04:17 PM)

I use
2- 50' (For full body artistic work)
6- 25' (mostly breast and waist harness)
4- 12' (sinch and breast)
4-   6' (ankles and writs)
Most of my rope is purchased at Home Depot along with metal hardware that I
use to speed things up.

slve4me -> RE: beginning bondage (9/25/2006 12:44:35 PM)

all the advice about lengths and burning the ends are all valid, but the most important thing is the use of the rope in terms of safty!

I saw some links posted, but not read them so i asume they talk about basic safty. assuming you are statring off with simple ties like hands behind back, ankles etc, get that right before moving onto more advanced stuff. the most important thing to lookm out for is to ensure adaquate blood flow. this means looping the rope looser than you might think is needed as in bindage it has a tendendy to tighten up on it's own. watch out for loos of feeling, pins and needles, blue skin, numbness etc.these are all signs of resttriced blod flow, which can cause long term damage. with experience the top/bottom can gauge this but untilthen keep it loose and for short periods, say 20/30 min max.
