A recent article from the Toronto Star, "the ICE idea", is catching on and it is a very simple, yet important method of contact for you or a loved one in case of an emergency. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is program the number of a contact person or persons and store the name as "ICE".

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which numbers to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under.
Following a disaster in London The East Anglican Ambulance Service has launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign. The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and with it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency ". In an emergency situation, Emergency Services personnel and hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact your next of kin, by simply dialing the number programmed under "ICE".

Please forward this. It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

A great idea that will make a difference!

It has already been promoted around my area by the EMS and public relations departments.

I've done this. I put it after the name, so that it stays in alpha order, but it's still clearly seen when I (or anyone) scrolls through. Guess who's ICE1? My girl anne.

I guess it is a great idea if you do not lose your cellphone in the emergency or it does not become damaged.  Considering how frail they are, it is doubtful they will survive any kind of catastrophe, but certainly possible.  Of course you would also have to make sure that you carry it on you at all times, which it seems that many people appear to do.

I added ICE to my cell phone about 3 year's ago.  Good to see it still circulating the internet.  More people will be aware and it will definately help in case of emergency.  Whether the cell lives or not it doesn't hurt to program it in...just in case.

FYI: EMS type folk in the US don't rummage through people's cell phones.  We train them to pay attention to the patient. (Contrary to popular belief, they do not look in your wallet for an organ donor card either.)  Medics could care less about that stuff.  They look for emergent things like a medic-alert bracelet or necklace.  They deal with managing your airway, your heartbeat and controlling any life-threatening issues and ultimately, we want to get you to a center where definitive care can be rendered.

Paramedics do not make notifications to next of kin!!!!! We leave identifying next of kin and that sort of thing to the hospital staff (social services, pastoral care) and the local police department (or the coroner/ME's office if you're dead.)

Here's the LAFD's blog on the subject.....http://lafd.blogspot.com/2005/08/lafd-talks-about-ice.html.....reinforcing that pre-hospital providers don't readily rummage for information like that.

(edited to fix the LAFD link)
