NYC mulls ban on trans fats in eateries

By DAVID B. CARUSO, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 48 minutes ago

Three years after the city banned smoking in restaurants, health officials are talking about prohibiting something they say is almost as bad: artificial trans fatty acids.

The city health department unveiled a proposal Tuesday that would bar cooks at any of the city's 24,600 food service establishments from using ingredients that contain the artery-clogging substance, commonly listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil.

YaY! that means I would not have to ask restaurants if they use it when I go out to eat! When I do the service people always look at me like I am speaking a foriegn language

LOL in an uber litigious society and a culture that prides itself in suggesting that "responsible mature adult" is a farce and that victims should be pandered to.

Which plenty of people in bdsm should relate to considering some of the responses to recent topics...

Evidence now reveals that these fats create a risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) by raising low density lipoprotein (LDL, or, “bad” cholesterol) in our bodies.  Because CHD is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., it is required that saturated fat and cholesterol are listed on the Nutrition Panel of food products.  As of January, this year, trans fat is also a required listing.  Trans fat is described as hydrogenated oil – when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to increase the shelf life and flavor of foods.  Typical foods containing trans fats are margarine and various snack foods, however most trans fats can be found in bread products such as crackers, cakes, and cookies.  Awareness of trans fat has been raised because while saturated fat and cholesterol also create risks of CHD by raising LDL, trans fats are consumed, on average, 4-5 times more.  There is a misunderstanding that all fats are alike.  However, animal and plant fats, while consumed in moderation, can actually provide health benefits, as opposed to trans fats, saturated fats, and dietary cholesterol.  Because of this, it is suggested that consumers compare foods and eat such bad fats at a minimum. Eliminating them entirely from one’s diet may seem ideal, but is not always practical.

Why do we need that law? If you object to the food then don't eat it. Go home and cook your own shit. I'm not forceing you to eat my food and recipies so why are you bugging me with yours?

Part of the trouble is that there was resistance to even labeling the food as containing this toxic sludge. I have no problem with restaurants using these, but put the fact that they do on the menu! If we do not know how can we choose?

Hello A/all,

This cracks me up.

A corporation suppresses evidence that suggest their product (cigarettes, trans-fats, DDT, whatever) is a horrible product that kills people.

People sue the company because the product kills or damages them.

The people are considered litigious assholes and should take responsibility for their actions.

True, but shouldnt the company who pays their scientists to provide them with real empirical evidence and then suppresses it to boost their profit margin have to take responsibility for their actions?

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

Sinergy

I agree with you here.  Not sure it needs to be made law, but people ought to be able to know what they're eating if they want to.  I was on an extremely strict medical diet years ago.  It was horrendously limiting and as a result I rarely went out to eat.  But ya know, it's nice to go out with family and friends sometimes, rather than be left behind as they're all heading out. I also have a lot of lunch meetings for work - - in restaurants.  I learned that quite often chicken and steak are marinated in sugary substances.  I learned that most wait staff have no idea how their food is prepared, nor do they have much interest in finding out for you and will likely lie to tell you what you want to hear (unless of course you tell them you have severe food allergies and will become quite ill - that seems to scare them).  More and more people in our society are discovering food allergies that can cause them potentially serious problems.  While it's a lot easier to just cook at home, those occasions when restaurants are frequented, it would be nice to have some healthy options.

Good to know.

Banning might be a bit of a stretch, unless we're talking about school cafeterias where the kids are too young to make their own choices.

Other than schools, why not just require clear labeling wherever trans fats are used? I'd love to avoid this frankenfood without having to ask!

Good post, Girlie.

I'm not sure if I'm for the government eliminating one's choice, but I would like to see it become a mandatory requirement in that be posted and made known to those potential patrons

The trouble is they are not making a law that says You will label all your dishes as to Trans Fat content and let the people choose.
They are making a law saying you can't use it at all.

Can you say Food Police State, LOL

I think restaurants should disclose the ingredients which are proven harmful, and offer healthier choices.  If someone still wishes to order the bad food... let them.

The difference between this situation and second hand smoke in public places, is that no one is forcing the non-trans fats eating patron to consume the harmful trans-fats  that others are consuming.

If people want to have a poor diet... fine, if people want to smoke ... go ahead.  When the unhealthy choices of one individual are forced to be the unhealthy non-choices of other individuals is where the injustice lies.  No one should be forced to partake in dangerous activities while in the general public, just because a small percentage of that public wishes to contaminate the public environment.

....here in the UK there is enormous consumer resistence to the idea of genetically modified food. America would like to sell europe soya beans but can't guarantee it isnt contaminated with GM...........now it has been reported that American negotiators have resisted a requirement to label GMfoods as such before selling them in europe.
This is not an issue about people telling us what to eat...it is an issue about knowing exactly what it is we eat. No label, no awareness means no choice.

there isnt enuff disclosure.  IMO food in restaurants is iffy.  we might have clamped down on e-coli and food borne illnesses 1st.  the burger lobby made laws that they cant be sued for obesity. so in a way this is a rebuttal.

now listen up. i just pigged out on 4- count em. 1234 eggs. with chaddar chease. i brewed a pot of coffee - the CAFFINATED kind. *ducks*

it will be my second cup.

with any luck- i will get a new speed rx. whoopzy i mean add med.   burp.

and no im not drunk. i have a host of physical problems- which make it difficult to type or concentrate.

margarine is 1 molecule away from plastic.

everything is going to kill us.

i sorta favor this law. if anything to check the food industries NONDISCLOSURE...to us. try raising a kid on healthy food.  arghh.

the law as a gesture is shrewd. it seeks to check the food-pharma industry- which as of 6-30-06 one can no longer sue rxs in the usa anymore. should we look for lower prices???  ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
