I realize I have some odd views on some subjects. However to me marriage always meant till death do you part. Yep, I realize everybody makes mistakes. Although in my mind...it was still death do you part. Guess the world thinks differently?

Well at least thisDefense of Marriage approach actually tries to promote marriages - rather than simply trying to prevent people from getting married.

In My view, Covenant Marriage may be a good idea only because it makes people go to couseling before and during a marriage (sort of forcing each to deal with issues before entering/preventing others from taking the leap). Other than that, I don't know how the Covenant would be helpful, except maybe for forcing 2 people hating each other to wait out 2 years, or take a "war of the roses" aproach to ending things. M

If you look at the poll

Do you think covenant marriages can really lower the divorce rate?
No way! It's no different than traditional marriage. 47%
Yes! Faith is strong enough to do this. 39%
I'm not sure. 14%

In my mind it is about 50-50. I do agree with the war of the roses approach. If one is abusing the other, they've finally decided to take a stand. Things can get ugly pretty fast.

I'd recommend counseling to anyone in any marriage though. Hard to imagine breaking up without trying everything in your ability to make things work.

i am pretty sure my state (OK) has covenant marriage, but there is no way i would do it. Not that i take marriage lightly; i would try everything before divorcing. But the idea of the government telling me whether or not i'm allowed to divorce someone is creepy to me. Of course around here it is billed as this huge religious thing, which also turns me off. To each's own, but i do not want someone else's religion in my personal life.

Just my $0.02....

Divorce or no divorce, no real legal way to stop a spouse from packing up and moving in with a new boyfriend if she has her mind made up. Premarital counseling and lengthy engagements only work for those who approach such things honestly.

Seems kind of duplicative to me, too, Gloria - and furthermore seems much more appropriate to the church than to legislation. The one part I like is about the required premarital counseling. It ought to be a lot harder to get married. . . and a lot easier to get divorced.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the fact is covenant marriage or not, the Court can decide to deny a divorce. While it is rarely ever done, I have seen cases where the Judge has refused to grant a divorce, even when both parties wanted it. Been in the Family Law business for over 8 years, and that is still one of the odder things I have seen, and trust me, I've seen quite a bit on that front!
