Popeye Popeye,

I really do feel sorry for you.  There was no criminal act, hence there never should have been a grand jury.  It was all a political game.  What got us to the lie never should have happened, it was a political agenda which had no legal basis.  No law was ever broken.

Someone is gonna bring it up sooner or later, what bearing do the former acts that recieved nothing but a censure vote ave on this event.
(ie the 1984 case where the Democratic congressman flew his 16 year old page to europe and actually had sex with him admitted it and got censure and re elected.) Not as an excuse but as a precedent for the severity called for in the current case.

Does it not smack of double standard to send this Republican to jail for E-mails with no physical contact (that we know of) while a censure vote was considered enough for a Demorate who had actual sex with a 16 year old page?

BTW I'm not saying that the double standard makes Foley less guilty or anything like that, simply asking that this concept be examined.

The difference Archer, and please correct me if I am wrong I am too busy at the moment to research dates,  I do not think the laws we have now regarding travel and sex with minors had been written then.  What happened was out of the country and reach of the law, not to mention that where they were the child was probably of age since 16 is age of consent in most of Europe.  The legal basis to charge a crime was shaky.  Should that happen now there are laws on the books to charge him with and I would be all for it.

There are laws on the books to charge Foley with a crime,  ask him, he helped write them, therefore he should be charged accordingly.

This will all be out of the news before the election -- I expect Dick Cheney to invite Foley to go quail hunting and the problem will be solved.

Playfulone, ah....there was something  very illegal about what Clinton did; he lied UNDER OATH about it
He lied about doing another woman.  For all we know his wife knew and they have an open marriage, which is none of our Goddamned business unless we are personally interested in blowing him, and therefore jealous.
quote:

You or I would go to prison for that!
How many people in modern history go to jail for cheating?  You have to lie about sex, because the truth is too shocking most of the time, especially if it looks like cheating to the masses.
quote:

And he was Impeached by the House of Representatives for it
Only because they were jealous wankers in my opinion.
quote:

I don't think it's right for anyone in public office to use their position to take advantage of another person sexually but that's just me
Oh puhleez!   Everyone uses what they have in order to get what they want.   Sex is something a lot of people want, and will go to great lengths to get.   It's primal, necessary!

Now they said on the news that Cong. Foley's brother-in-law said he's "Not an Alcoholic."
Got that, "N-O-T an Alcoholic."
CNN is becomming "All Foley, All the Time!
Cong. Patrick "Patches" Kennedy went to Alcohol Rehab and he said he "wasn't" drinking.

This is how it should have played out:

Q: Did you have sex with that woman?
A: Hell yes I had sex with that woman. And it was goooood too! Boy howdy...

Foley had sex with a woman?

Did he ask her to wear a strap on and a boy scout uniform?

Kinky.

I think you have to be dead to think this isn't funny. It shows everything that is hilariously wrong with the morals, culture, media and politics in this country.

I don't.  The little happy dance that we are currently doing to see a Republican fall is already coming back to bite us in the ass.  This isn't really a political issue.  The guy was a pedophile.  You will find those on either side of the isle.

But no the spin machine is in full gear.  First, there are those trying to spin it into somehow being the Democrat's fault.  (I'm sure someone is working on the "Clinton caused pedophilia" script as we speak.)   There is Rush out there putting forth the theory that Foley was somehow "set up".  Its the modern day "She was asking for it, just look how she was dressed" attempt to focus blame on the victim.  Rush also blamed it on Democrat's creating a more permissive society.

But worse is the fact that Foley's inappropriate behavior and subsequent coming out of the closet has just fueled the fires of those that try to equate homosexuality and pedophilia.  And don't worry, that blame will wander over to encompass all
"alternative lifestyles" in time - and don't think for a second BDSM will be excluded from that.

So what are we all so happy about?

Chaingang -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 10:32:32 AM)

I dunno. Maybe the fact that it can't be shit forever this way, eventually the pendulum swings and we are back to our good old selves again, restoring lost liberties etc. Like others, I sometimes really do wish things would get temporarily much worse so that people would see how wrong things have gotten lately. Anybody can see that for the last 6 years things have hardly been permissive.

Right now, they are just boiling the frog slowly and it's not ready to jump out of the pot yet.

This Foley story can be spun however someone wants to spin it. And while I truly think this Foley thing will lose steam - it's front and center right now because everyone from Faux News to the AP is actually claiming Foley is a Democrat. You can't make this stuff up!

And that's how funny it is.

LQQK OVER THERE!!!

Frankly, I'm a little disappointed Foley didn't just try to use the old Flip Wilson line: “The devil made me do it.” But then maybe the story's not really finished yet...

IT IS NOT FOLEY'S FAULT - HE IS INNOCENT!!!!!

It's those little pages acting all sexy and whatnot preying on our poor helpless Congressmen - these men of integrity don't stand a chance against those little demonic pages and their seductive ways.

Before the flames start - TONGUE IN CHEEK people!!!   ROFL

cyberdude611 -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 11:43:32 AM)

The bigger picture is the long-term effects of this case. Sure the Republicans may lose congress, but there could be bigger problems. Will there be a public call for emails and IMs to be monitored by the government? Will there be more laws restricting sex even between consenting adults? When you look at this from that angle, most Americans would be willing to burn the Constitution if it assured their children would be safe. And the Democrats would probably be willing to burn parts of the Constitution to get into power. Just like the GOP has been burning it the past 6 years to keep in power.

With pedophiles surfing the net, problems with websites like MySpace, and all these internet crimes and scandals....the internet won't be a free place much longer. So enjoy it while it lasts...

juliaoceania -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 11:54:14 AM)

There is a solution.. having a new domain like .kids or .teen  in which the sites that are on these venues agree to certain sorts of guidelines. Parents can block access to the regular internet. People who agree to use the teen or kids domains are in effect signing away privacy rights on those domains... just an idea on how we can keep our internet privacy and at the same time protect kids

LotusSong -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 12:31:55 PM)

Think the Republicans would've handled it any differently if it were a Democrat?

Maybe just a bit. they do like to drag Christianity and family values into things.

Estring -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 2:40:02 PM)

Well, well, well. Now we find out that the page in this case was 18 years old. I think that qualifies as an adult doesn't it? So I hope all those morons screaming about pedophiles and children in danger might do some apologizing. But of course I won't hold my breath on that.
It is funny that the same people who I'm sure were downplaying Clinton's getting oral sex from a young intern ( actually having sex, not just IM's) are probably the most vocal about what Foley did. At least Foley had the decency to resign.
Where was your outrage when in 1980 a Democratic congressman of  Massachusetts, Gerry Studds admitted to having sex with a 17 year old male whom he also provided with alcohol? Not only did he not resign, he was re-elected six times! Says quite a lot about the voters of Massachusetts doesn't it? ( Mary Jo Kopekni ring a bell?)
And it is interesting that Brian Ross from ABC news had this story at least a year ago but waited until now to release it And how did he come up with the page's age as 16 when in truth it was 18? It is hard to imagine that that was an accident.
It must be nice to react so emotionally and ignore the facts of a story when it suits your agenda. But of course when someone points out the facts, it kind of makes you look silly doesn't it?
And before anyone thinks I am defending Foley, I am certainly not. I am glad he resigned. It's too bad some others in the past didn't do the same.

servantforuse -> RE: Foley story takes turn into the hilarious... (10/5/2006 2:46:19 PM)

The Democrats are demanding that Speaker Hastrich resign because of some e-mails sent to a page by a House member.  I sure didn't hear them demanding that Clinton resign when he was actually having sex in the oval office with an intern. What a bunch of hippocrits.

I was only 12 years old.... my political outrage button had not grown in yet...lol.

I am also not outraged over Watergate...smiles

We shall see where the chips fall.. one page hired an attorney.. how many pages were there?

My problem is that the Republican party sets itself up to be more moral than the rest of humanity... and then blames everyone else when they do not live up to their own advertising... it is called hypocrisy.... glass houses

Well, well, well. Now we find out that the page in this case was 18 years old.

The whole predator angle of this story doesn't interest me that much as discussed in greater detail elsewhere in another thread. In sum, I'm not willing to barter any further adult freedoms to keep other people's kids "safe" when they are clearly of age when sex is of interest to them. It is a foolish parent that doesn't recognize a child's physical maturity, readiness and inclination to express himself sexually. For me to become interested in the pedophile angle, the child in question has to be younger than 13 - otherwise I don't really give a fuck.

But...

A correction is in order. ABC is saying that the illicit IM conversations began when the page was 16 and continued on to the present when he is apparently now 18.

Like I said, not the big issue in mind. But this is still one of those situations where a person in authority over another should refrain from sexual relations with the person in the subordinate position. Such power disparity raises the issue of consent vs. coercion.

Anyway, the story remains the same. As usual, you've come to the table empty-handed, Estring.
