There was a new member who showed up for my monthly dinner group Saturday night, who has Tourette's syndrome, a malady that causes him to twitch uncontrollably. Consequently, this man cannot drive a car, and had sometimes faced predjudice in the workplace. Of course, the people in my dinner group are all too polite and intelligent to ever let this predjudice them against him, and I am glad he seemed to have a very good time at the dinner.
I just wish the rest of the world was as understanding. I ended up giving him a ride home from dinner, and we had quite a chat. He doesn't feel sorry for himself at all, but he has a Master's degree (and is working on his Ph.d.), and is still finding it hard to land even a part-time job in his field. Apparently, his twitching just freaks out some job interviewers, and he can't seem to get past the ground floor, as far as the job hunt. I am saying prayers for him.
I keep thinking what a challenge his life has to have been, seeing as he is now 38 years old, and he's had Tourette's, plus ADD, since childhood. It's been on my mind since Saturday night. It seems like some folks were ust born with heavier loads than others, and had to contend with it right from the beginning, for whatever reason.
