Emperor1956 -> RE: Versatility in Cursing (10/22/2006 7:13:13 PM)

quote:

happypervert:   if you spank a Japanese girl she will have an "aka kitsu", or red ass

some more Japanese:

unco -- turd
opai -- tits
chin chin (or ochinko if you're being cute) -- cock
omonko -- pussy
okama -- gay

Well, yes and no, happy.  All of your translations are dead on.  But they aren't really curses.  The problem is that culturally, the Japanese don't swear like we do.  Body parts are not curses.  Japanese don't call eachother "pussies" or "pricks".  If you call a man in Japan "omonko" (a junior high term for vagina) he'll laugh at you because you are a stupid gaijin who (a) doesn't speak Japanese very well, and/or (b) who doesn't know human anatomy.  Most of the terms you quoted above would be seen as childish, or mildly rude, but not curses.

A Japanese businessman, frustrated, might say "chikusho!" which is sort of like "oh shit!" (but doesn't mean defecation).  You can insult someone by using rude pronouns (many archaic).  Japanese doesn't use pronouns, usually, so saying to someone "kisama!", which literally means "you!" is very rude.  If you wanted to say "you don't know shit!" to someone (i.e. "you are wrong") you'd say "chi-gau!"  which literally means "different!" or "baka iu na!" (don't talk nonsense).

If you really want to insult someone, use the wrong verb form, or use a pronoun (instead of the person's name or title) or the person's name (instead of title).  This can be extremely rude.

All of these are very masculine forms -- my wife, who is fluent in Japanese (mine is much weaker), has never heard a Japanese woman say anything remotely like a curse.  She says the rudest thing she can think of to call someone is "baka yaroh" which is sort of like "stupid rube!"

"Joder apagado" really means:

"Hello, I can't speak Spanish for shit, but I typed 'fuck off' into an online English-Spanish translation website, and it came back with 'joder apagado,' which is gibberish but I don't know that."
