onceburned -> Judaism and BDSM (1/29/2005 2:09:37 PM)

An article in the current issue of Jewsweek

Is there a hereditary inquisitiveness that leads Jews to bondage? Helen Ruth Rosner travels to the Fetish Fair Fleamarket to iron out the kinks of the chosen people.

The ties that bind

Thanks for linking that - really fun article for me to read! I'm sure many could relate to it; we Jews don't hold a monopoly on guilt and over-bearing mothers :)

I think we Catholics certainly have our fair share of that market. Interesting article.

It's interesting that with a culture such as Judaism, currently women are viewed as dominant whereas men are viewed in submission, however often times that only demonstrates the secular culture, not the orthodox culture. Though it does make me feel a bit more comfortable being a secular Jewish sub male :P

I didn't find a lot of content in the article, although I have to keep in mind that it was written as an introduction for Jews who are not in the scene.

I think the whole 'predisposition to bdsm based on years of suffering and submission to God' line to be complete claptrap.

I do agree with those who observe that because Jews are taught to be be inquisitive about the status quo, we have a tendency to stray towards social experimentation, which is why out people are often at the center of revolutionary movements, sexual and otherwise.

i have to say that i found it funny and light. which is about what i was expecting. i just have one question...when is that restaraunt going to get some franchises in the us?

I was suprised there weren't more refferences to the old testament in terms of BDSM-like behavior, such as the story of Esthar etc.
