These days being oversized is in style. Being able to "eat like a man" and consume mass quantities of food is something that is marketed to show a "healthy" appetite. I never had an eating disorder. I was just "skinny".. Oh BTW... being called "skinny" is NOT a compliment. It is a derrogatory comment! Of course, I should take it, and not call someone who is obese "fat", right?
Nicole Ritchie made big news because her bones show. But there are many over weight celebs who embrace their body image and there is no news camera there, questioning how unhealthy their fat is? I am not saying one is better than the other- I am merely pointing out a double standard.
Why can the blacks have a music award and a black Miss America, but the other nationalities can't? Why are there music awards for blacks , and tv stations for the black and nothing for other nationalities? Why does society think thses double-standards are acceptable??
I , like many who claim to be open minded, really are just as biased and closed minded as the rest of society.
Before accusing others of bigotry.. look in the mirror.
Man, You covered alot of ground in the Op, WHG. i'm gonna take my time and try to respond coherently.
i'm 5ft 7in, and have been since i was 12 yrs old. i felt like a freak then, and am still self-conscious about being tall. (BTW, i was also skinny as a rail, but i was more concerned about being freakishly tall.)
Yes, i was teased, but most of my suffering was self-inflicted. i think most all 12 to 18 yr olds have self-consciousness about something, to one degree or another.
To say that any mistreatment W/we receive justifies O/our mistreatment of A/anyone else is not correct, IMO. Remember, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."
As for the "it's ok to be fat but not to be skinny"; i think You make a good point. Due to meds, stress and a funky thyroid, i have been alot of different sizes in recent years, and i definately got more aggravation for being too thin than for too heavy. Apart my my unmentionable, i cannot understand where P/pl think T/they can get away with personal comments like these at all. To me, they are just plain rude.
As for the Black TV Channel and the Black Miss America pagent, i guess it's partially market-driven. Other ethnicities where i live are really good at organizing parades and festivales (in fact, there are more ethnicities than i even knew of) but that seems to be the extent of the activity.
i think it's not likely that Hispanic or Latino P/pl will ever join hands and create a TV Channel for T/themselves (though i do have one spanish-speaking channel) because, IME, most Cubans do not esp like Puerto Ricans, who in turn seem to distrust Mexicans, and so on.
i think i am free of the sin of bigotry. i do not harm/insult/discriminate or otherwise deliberately offend A/anyone based on race, ethnicity, relgion, sexual orientation, etc.
The only P/pl whose sh*t i jump are actual bigots, saying the "N" word or s'thing equally offensive.
i'm sure You're right; i have some pre-conceived ideas or such, and am not perfect -- in fact, very far from it. But i just don't think it's fair to say E/everyone is a bigot.
