Kerry didn't say anything that students don't say to students everyday across this country!  The NCLB mandated military recruiters on high school campuses.  Students meet with a recruiter and return to class all hyped up with beautiful slick brochures - telling students they're gonna join the Army, go to Hawaii and get thousands in signup bonuses.  Students immediately chime in with the facts - "you're not going to Hawaii - you're going to Iraq and get your ass blown off!  So sit down and study!"   Students know Bush LIED about prewar intel and sent our troops into a WAR OF CHOICE without adequate armor!  Kerry was talking about the idiots in the White House who perpetrated the quagmire in Iraq!

LotusSong -> RE: John Kerry... (11/1/2006 5:39:26 AM)

Some people just can't tell a joke!  What he meant to say (as I heard on the news this morning) was an inference that if one didn't stay in school and get good grades they would end up (like the President) being stuck in Iraq.

ZenrageTheKeeper -> RE: John Kerry... (11/1/2006 5:58:00 AM)

Sounds to me like Kerry finally grew a pair.

Of course the Repulicans are trying to make it sound like he was insulting the troops. They haven't taken any accountability over this war, why should they start now?

So any criticism they take is directed must be directed at the troops.. after all, it was obviously their choice to go over there int he first place.[/sarcasm]

I personally think that Kerry did not misspeak.  I believe that he intentionally slammed our soldiers and it was directed at them because so many of them are conservative Republicans who believe in the mission.

This just doesn't make sense, Ken. WHY would someone slam the TROOPS??????  They are not given a choice where they will go one that sign up. It's not their fault.

It was intended to be directed at our "highly educated and intelligent C average" president. He just botched the delivery.  In summary, he wanted to say "get smart or make bad decisions- like Dubya"

KenDckey:
"Conservative republicans who believe in the mission"  Does that include the deserters, and the suicides?
Are you really suggesting that there are  only republicrats in the military?
For a man who seems to be in favor of this war of aggression I am curious as to why you have not gone down and enlisted...58 is not all that old.  I know of several older than you who have pulled two tours in country.
You have heard me say it before and I will say it again ...anyone who will go in the military and kill others so that the rich can get richer is a fool.

sub4hire -> RE: John Kerry... (11/1/2006 6:35:01 AM)

Could this be why?

Army Lowers Bar for Recruits
Army Secretary Noel Harvey and Gen. Richard Cody, the vice chief of staff, said Monday that the Army is using looser Defense Department rules that permits it to sign up more high school dropouts and people who score lower on mental-qualification tests, but they denied that this meant it was lowering standards.

Until Army recruiters began having trouble signing up enough recruits earlier this year, the Army had set minimum standards that were higher than those of the Defense Department.
The Army has had a recruiting shortfall of 6,000 to 8,000 soldiers during the past 12 months. It hasn't fallen so short of its annual goal since 1979, several years after the Vietnam War.

[image]http://images.military.com/pixel.gif[/image]Harvey and Cody addressed the recruiting issue in news conferences during the annual convention of the Association of the U.S. Army. The Department of Defense "standards on qualification tests call for at least 60 percent Category 1 to 3 [the higher end of testing] and 4 percent Category 4," the lowest end, Harvey said. "The other services follow that standard and the Army National Guard always followed it as well. But the active Army chose a standard of 67 percent in Categories 1-3, and 2 percent Category 4." It now will use the Defense Department guidelines. http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,78111,00.html?ESRC=army-a.nl

Too bad it's also often-times true.
How many men came back in body bags from Vietnam with PhD's in their pockets?
The military sends recruiters to shopping malls and places where kids with nothing but time on their hands hang out. They entice them with the idea of "money for college"...and then turn around and send them off to a foreign land to die for a questionable cause.
For some kids, the military offers the only way out of a dead-end, minimum wage situation.
Don't think for a second that military recruiters don't use that to their advantage. They are salesmen who just happen to work for the armed forces.

That was then, this is now.

The military these days doesn't want convicted criminals, they want soldiers with, at the bare minimum, a GED but really prefer an associates degree or higher.

That and the fact that today's military is all volunteer.  If you are dumb as a post, you can volunteer and they'll take you if you meet the minimum requirements.  On the other hand, if you are dumb as a post and don't want to join up, then you don't have to.  Same for the smarty smart pants people too!

The point is, the recuiters may use car salesman tactics, but it is still up to the person to say yes.  If you don't understand that by joining the military you are eligible to be sent somewhere to fight, then that's kinda your fault.

I think the election frenzy has once again caused the Republicans to jump on any little word they can and blow it out of proportion.  I took his comment as the reality that kids that don't finish school seek out the military as an option to support themselves.   Some people are born rich.some are born poor.  We've had one of those idiots governing us for 8 years.. you think people would get used to them.

I still fail to see how what the Republicans are doing now is any different than what the Democrats have done in the past when they were in charge?  (Ahem, it was a Democratic President with a Democratic Congress that got us into Vietnam)

I guess it's just easier to remember what the current idiots are doing than to remember what the former idiots did.  If, and I say if, the Democrats regain control (polls are useless, the actual election is the only "poll" that counts) then they will be the ones doing stupid things and they will be the ones being bashed.

It all runs in cycles, the only constant is the people elected (regardless of party) are going to put themselves first and maybe we will get some benefit from it.

sub4hire -> RE: John Kerry... (11/1/2006 6:52:42 AM)

A bit more indepth article.  Guess we still have to wonder how they met their recruiting goals this year?

Struggling for recruits, Army relaxes its rules
With more than 2,200 dead and 16,700 wounded, and a large percentage of Americans disapproving of the war in Iraq, the US military is struggling to meet its recruiting goals. With little fanfare, the Army has eased enlistment restrictions, allowing soldiers previously considered too heavy, too old, too sickly, or too uneducated to head off to basic training.
In January, the enlistment age for active-duty Army recruits was raised from 35 to 40. Late last year, a key drug test for recent use of marijuana was softened. Last fall, a high school equivalency program was put in place for high school dropouts. And last spring, a ban on childhood asthmatics was removed.
But in a country where the rate of teenage obesity climbed from 5 percent to 16 percent over the last 30 years, perhaps the most significant revision is a loophole that allows recruits who are too heavy to meet weight or body fat limits to take the fitness test anyway.

I don't know, man.
A few weeks ago, I heard a clip on NPR where he was reading a statement regarding his No Child Left Behind initiatives and he pronounced "Ad-min-EEEEEEE-stray-TOHRS" like he was literally sounding it out as he read.
I did not know whether to laugh or cry.

Just because a person has trouble with public speaking doesn't make him stupid.  And just because a person has book smarts doesn't mean they have common sense.

I have a brother with a genius I.Q., can read 400 words a minute, smart as hell - the poor sap has no common sense, can't hold a decent job, and is frickin' boring as all get out.

To confuse intelligence with common sense - they aren't the same.

Oh, ok. So, stupid people deserve what they get.

Some recruiters make promises they know they are never going to keep. Plenty of the men and women in Iraq joined the armed forces "for college money" when we were not at war. They put in their time, but now the military won't let them out. But I guess they deserve what they get for being stupid enough to believe a lie told to them by our government and its agents.

And people are saying Kerry's statement was thoughtless and insulting.

So did Kerry, on the Senate floor, grandstanding with every other member of Congress wanting to look patriotic.

They all got the same intel the White House did and they made the same conclusions (as well as the Saudis, British, Russians, French, etc.)

The difference is, Bush was President - he was the one tasked with making the final decision.  They were all equally wrong, it's just the guy who made the final decision (even if was the same as everyone else's decision) is the one who gets the blame.

It's all part of being in charge - you gotta take the good with the bad.

Exactly, haven't you ever done anything stupid then have to suffer the consequences?

People, who aren't even in the Military, make stupid decisions that get them killed.

Um, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, HW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush, and the next doof we get in 2008.

Have we gotten both from any of these yahoos?  Nope!  You can expect more from your leaders, but don't be disappointed when they don't produce.  ;-)

Don't know. Why is John Kerry still talking to us?

Although it looks like he'll not making any more "jokes" on the campaign trail:. He won't be performing in Minnesota:
quote:

Tim Walz lost some of their pizazz Tuesday night when Sen. John Kerry pulled out of the Democratic rally. (http://www.mankatofreepress.com/local/local_story_305000815.html?keyword=topstory)

CNN reports that Casey canceled plans to have Kerry join him in Philadelphia. The Iowa congressional candidate canceled an event later with week with Kerry. (http://www.eyewitnessnewstv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5616595&nav=F2DO)

Let's not forget, John Kerry is previously quoted as saying it is the US Military who are terrorists in Iraq. In a December 2005 appearance on CBS 'Face The Nation' Kerry said; "You've got to begin to transfer authority to the Iraqis. And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women." (Entire Transcript: http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_120405.pdf) Another 'joke'?

I agree Kerry should be irrelevant. You have to convince him to be so.
