I developed a strange problem though.  My blood pressure would drop below 70.  Normal for me is in the 80's, and when it dipped I was light headed and would almost black out.  I'd have to sip orange juice and lie down for an hour or two, the prenatal clinic made me do this, as taking 3 busses for a few hours to get there made this happen like clockwork.  I couldn't eat or drink anything on the busses, and there wasn't the time nor opportunity to drink or eat between them, as they were so close together.

That's actually very common, especially in the later trimester.  The baby is sitting on your vena cava and compromising the venous return to the heart.  That disruption in the circulatory system can cause havok on cardiac output.  The body senses that something's wrong and the baroreceptors kick in, dropping blood pressure.  It's one of the reasons that expectant mothers in the later stages of pregnancy are recommended to lay on their left side....it pulls the fetus away from the inferior vena cava and allows venous blood return to the heart.

The nice things about eating carbs like bread pasta rice and potatoes is that they are more stablizing and will not tend to "spike" your blood sugars quite as much as sodas and even fruits will. The high sweets are good for a quick fix but then the body still needs to metabolize and balance out again.

I had gestational diabetes with my third child and the diet they put me on was more like this:

when you wake up..have a piece of toast with either a slice of cheese or peanut butter. (this gives you carb and protein)
A couple hours later you want to have something simple like maybe some oatmeal or cereal, juice, milk and perhaps an egg if you want something more.
Your mid morning snack might be a piece of fruit or a handleful of animal crackers or maybe some raw veggies with a yogurt dip.
Then lunch will be something containing a 3 oz piece of meat, a piece of bread, veggies and a starch with milk
Mid afternoon snack can be similar to your mid morning snack
Then dinner as normal
Then a bedtime snack.

This will help keep your body a bit more stabilized throughout the day without overloading you with calories. The nice thing about it is.. because you are eating smaller amounts throughout the day..you will be hungry each time  you stop to eat but wont be overwhelmingly starving thereby needing to stuff with larger portions. I wish you good luck through all of this..

First off, congratulations on the pregnancy and best wishes for a healthy happy baby.[:D]

I am unclear as to why your insurance has a lag time between regular care and prenatal care. Perhaps you need to get on the horn and make a fuss......you know the old adage, 'the squeaky wheel gets the oil' If that doesn't work, go to a planned parenthood/community clinic if necessary.  Sometimes you have to sit a good part of the day to get in and that sucks but it beats risking complications to you and your baby....or worse if you pass out while driving.   It is very difficult to give ACCURATE medical advice via chatrooms, message boards and internet.   We have no medical history, and no lab values, no medical training or schooling in many cases, nor a physical exam to base our replies.  People give advice from their hearts and with the best intentions. So please don't think this is an attack.

We really don't know for sure what the diagnosis/problem is. Having been pregnant does not make me an obstetrician, just as owning a car does not make me a mechanic.  I am, however a registered nurse of 13 years, and ask that for the babies sake, you go to someone who provides prenatal care. ....even if it means you have to pay 50 bucks a month out of pocket for the next 5 years.   The two of you are worth it.

If your exam does reveal gestational diabetes, Buxom Goddess has a good(excellent) handle on the workings of  the diet.

I am diabetic and the times my sugar got too low to the point of almost passing out, i took a destrosol tablet....orange taste. The doctor made me take classes at the hospital because my way of life had to change, re-learn how to eat etc....I have a pack of destrosol in my purse, at work, family and friends.  I dont know if those are good for pregnant women.

Whenever i travel, i am not worried cause i do have a provision of those tablets.  There isnt a store at every corner......i am just playing it safe so this is less worries for my Master.

Good luck [:)]

PS:  RiotGirl, hope this help :)
