NP, that is why I posted the statistics. To show it still happens and to show that it is really rare and we don't need anyone freaking out that we have a tainted blood supply as we did when AIDS was first ID'd.

I suspect the incidence is less than what I stated, those were the NIH stats from 2005 and each year it has dropped in occurance.

Coming from a tissue banking person: This is especially true since ALL blood and tissue processors in the US (except for cornea banks) and those associated with the AATB (including Canada and some European nations) have now employed HIV/HCV RNA testing since early 2005 as an additional screening.  The advantage of RNA over the standard HIV antibody testing that was being done is that any nucleic acid testing on the specimens has a more narrow window of detection -- supposedly shorter by up to 11 days.  That's fairly significant, given that the HIVab testing (and the old PCR test) were the only reliable tools (aside from strict exclusionary donor screening) available to tissue and blood banks since the 90s.

If you warn people and they don't care and go on to have unprotected sex with you and contract the disease....I would have to think that they probably don't care much about the next person they sleep with either who would most likely be kept unaware of their interaction with you....or the next...or the next....or any of the people that those people may interact with..... You have the diagnosis....that means YOU have the responsibility not to put others at risk.

So why would you have sex with someone who doesn't care?

Just because you already have HIV doesn't mean that one of these bug chasers or ignorant/fearless individuals can't be carrying around other pathogens picked up in their careless encounters with other similarly infected individuals.

It's unfortunate, but Hep B and C are common co-infections afflicting the Poz community.  Theories behind it include the adage that "Well, it can't get any worse!"  Let me tell you -- hepatitis C is really not a treatable disease.  It's the number one cause of adult liver transplants in the US and in Canada.  And that's only a treatment -- it's not a cure.

I won't even tough the subject of superviruses, mutations and drug-resistant HIV strains.  All of this comes from Poz barebacking and being careless about one's health while at risk.

To the OP: You're immunosuppressed as is.  Please don't carelessly put yourself at risk for coinfections or mutating your virus to the point that you cannot be medically managed!

In the US, if a man is gay or has ever had sex with another man... they can never give blood. Ain't that a trip.

There are plenty of blood products out there which have not been screened. Corrupt companies simply relabel them and pass them on. The Brit lawyer who is up for corruption alongside the ex Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, is mixed up with just such a company in Italy which exports stuff like this. Profit over people, every time.
E

Tis NOT true in the US.  All blood products are screened and there are so many people who CANNOT give blood for medical reasons as simple as hypothryroidism and the meds they are on.......... ALL blood products are screened so well in the US.

I'm also not supposed to give blood because I've had sex with a man who had sex with men.

I work in the tissue banking industry and I'll call bullshit on this.

Why?  Just this past year there was a scandal involving a company based in Fort Lee, NJ called Biomedical Tissue Services that were illegally recovering cadaveric tissues (bones and soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, etc) from unscreened, untested donors.  These raw materials (solid bones like femurs, hemipelvis, and their tissues) were then distributed to End Processors who distributed transplantable bone grafts and product from this material, believing that all of their documentation and practices were done according to medical and ethical standards.  WRONG!  As it turns out, these creeps had falsified everything including their consent forms!    They forged signatures, illegally obtaining consent to recover parts from people whose families NEVER GAVE CONSENT. Some of these patients included people with CANCER!   This organization forged official death records to make it look like the people died from something else like a heart attack, and even changed their birthdays to make them appear younger.  Medical social histories were falsified.  With the collusion of funeral directors and other involved parties, they managed to BURY these patients with prosthetic devices in place of their bones and tissues -- all the while, the families had no idea what had transpired.
Given all of this fraudulent activity, it is uncertain as to whether the blood for testing that accompanied the donor material actually belonged to the donor, or whether it came from some other source.  Would you trust that they didn't just pull a red top and a purple top from their co-workers arm or from a known healthy donor.  All of this deception contributed to hundreds of thousands, if not millions more dollars in the pockets of former dentist turned chop-shop technician Mr Mastromarino.

http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2006/NEW01309.html
http://www.yourlawyer.com/articles/topic/biomedical_tissue_services_scandal?ylc_topic_next_page=6

Thousands of patients were end recipients of the tissues illegally and unethically recovered by this agency.  These folks don't know if they have HIV, hepatitis, syphillis, or even have received cancerous tissues into their bodies.

If there is one corrupt organization doing this sort of thing and unethically polluting the donor pool, do you think it's impossible for anyone else in the world to not be doing it.  Was this really an isolated case?  In court right now in Canada, Red Cross, government and private sector officials are in trial over a blood DISASTER in the 80s and 90s in their blood banking that caused over 1,000 new HIV infections and over 20,000 HCV infections.

Incidentally -- hypothyroidism is NOT a ruleout for blood or tissue donation.
I'd be happy to research for anyone the specific blood region you're in (country/region) for correct answers, however, one of the best general resources for blood donation information is at http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/0,1082,0_557_,00.html
It is up to date with the current Good Tissue Practice changes that the FDA implemented in 2005.

And the same is true for a woman who has had sex with a man who:
- has had sexual relations with another male.
- has performed herself, or had sex with a male who has had sex with someone for drugs or money.
- had taken herself or has had sex with someone who received blood products for hemophilia or human-pituitary derived growth hormones.

I didn't find out about that until after I had relations with a young bisexual man who was my first time. I feel cruddy because I'm type O... but grateful because I'm scared of needles.

The wash is that there is a contingent of the population, gay and otherwise, who are serially negative with all available testing on the market, or who have been monogamous and are out of any exposure infective window, and they answer those screening questions falsely so they can donate.

I've thought about doing that but it doesn't feel right to lie to people who are going to be taking my blood and giving it to others. I know it gets tested anyway, but still.

I'm a massage therapist and come into contact with all kinds of people with all kinds of things. I don't hold any prejudices against anyone but like to be informed so that I can take any necessary precautions. One of the things with HIV people is that they lose touch contact with people due to fear, that's a real shame.

Best wishes to you

When I donate blood, that question really pisses me off.  I'm a straight male, never had a homosexual encounter, however, that this question remains on the blood donation sheet, for no other reason than homophobia and bad science.  If it weren't for the fact that my blood could still help someone, despite the F'd up system getting it from point A to point B, I'd stop donating.

How many threads about your HIV status do you plan on starting today?

It doesn't matter how many threads she starts...  It doesn't matter how a person became HIV+ it's still earth shattering and we simply have to get it out into the open so that we can feel better about ourselves.

Ohhh BTW subwantsamaster I know how you feel I recently found out that I am HIV+ as well within the last month in fact and I'm at the stage that I'm still trying to figure out what the hell I'm gonna do...

Wait a minute: It's not homophobia and bad science -- it's really old statistics from the 1980s.  The restrictions have been in place since that time when HIV was actually still categorized as HTLV3 (human T-cell lymphotrophic virus type 3).

But, looking at it now....things still wouldn't change.  Gay men are still in a high risk group -- now for HCV.  But it would add an additional layer of ruleouts -- the young hispanic population and african american females in the 18 to 40 age bracket.  Can you see the ACLU lawsuits being levied because THOSE groups, just because those are the categories of new HIV infections on the rise?
