Hey subfever...

The exact same thing started happening to me yesterday too. I also get the blank screen when trying to access the other side. I'm also running an old PC using Win98. We're both near the same geographical area too. Wonder if that could have anything to do with it too?

Right! So you're all dialed in and connected now, what happens when you run Firefox?

FireFox asks me to sign in. I get a Hotmail sign-up page.

What does Firefox have to do with Hotmail? I don't even have a Hotmail account.

Well... I'm about the furthest thing from a techie that you're gonna get to... but my guess is that CM made a change in their home page, and our systems can no longer complete the download process for the page.

I can't imagine that being in the same general locale has anything to do with it.

go to all programs and find the firefox you loaded
click on it and tell me what it says

It gives me two choices, Mozilla FireFox, and Mozilla FireFox (safe mode). When I clicked on Mozilla FireFox, I get a Hotmail page asking me to sign in.

Adelphus -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/9/2006 9:28:20 PM)

Hmmm....that's kinda...strange....
I have no idea why it does that!;-p Maybe hotmail got set as your home page somehow.;-p
If you type in the collarme.com address in the address bar, will it take you there?

Okay... how do I delete FireFox from my system? I'll delete it and try to install it again.

And yes... if I type Collarme.com, it does take me there. But the page doesn't fully load. I just get a white screen.

subfever -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/9/2006 9:38:32 PM)

I went into settings on the AOL toolbar. From there, I went into internet properties. It indicated that my homepage is Hotmail.

I have no clue why this is. My homepage has been AOL for almost 10 years now, and has never been anything but AOL.

I changed the setting to AOL.

I tried loading Firefox again, but it still asks me to sign into Hotmail.

Adelphus -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/9/2006 9:39:02 PM)

Awwww.....I was so sure that would work....
Well, if it's not working I guess there's no need to reinstall it. To uninstall, Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Add or Remove Programs

There will be a list of all your programs in alphabetical order, so scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and hit the 'uninstall' option. That should do it.
Has your computer ever been able to see the front page or has it always done this?

I've been fully loading the home page and all subsequent pages on the other side for two years without a problem. The trouble all started yesterday.

subfever -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/9/2006 10:08:20 PM)

I just uninstalled FireFox, then re-installed it. But it still pops up a Hotmail sign-in page... [sm=river.gif]

Hello...

I just finished reading this whole thread, with much interest. I've been having the same problem for the past two days (as have several others I've read about). The home page of Collarme comes up... it says 'done' in the lower left hand corner of the page... but it's only a white, blank page.... hence no way to log in.  I've only belonged to the Collarme site for a couple of months... but in that time I've had no trouble ever having a page load, or signing in.

There was a thread under the 'off subject chat' yesterday and today... started by member 'ashtray', asking for help, and wondering if the server was down, because of this same problem. I posted 3 messages there about this topic, and now that thread is gone. I was checking this thread to see if the two had been combined or something... since it was the same topic. Anyone have any idea where a whole thread of discussion might have disappeared to???

I also have Windows 98, and do frequently run both scandisk, and defrag also. I have a few of the free diagnostic tools mentioned and use them. I've done all of the above, along with dumping any temp files, cookies, etc that I had..... just to see if that helped. Nothing. Everything else I usually access , including google, etc. loads perfectly. So that leads me to believe Collarme has been tweaked in some way.

Can someone here who can still access the management, or help, on Collarme..... let someone know of the problem?? Since I can't access the site at all, there's no way for me to report the problem to anyone. Much thanks in advance for any help with reporting the problem.

Any other ideas from any of you would be appreciated. I was gratified to see all the good helpful suggestions already made, to the person who asked for help initially.

Regards,

budderflywings~

I have been having the same issue, with the collarme site, and no others. Every other site I have gone to has loaded.
Thereflre to assume that all our computers are broken is a flawed assumption.
Something was changed, or *improved* on the site that has made it
so that some folks with pentium2 or lower processors cant load the site, it seems.
I happen to have a new puter on the way here. Ill post monday if that helps lol
NO I didnt get the puter because of the collarme site geeze lol

That's the exact same experience I've been having now since Wednesday.

Do you mean in Off Topic Discussion, the same forum that we are in now?

I have also defragged, scandisked, and deleted my temporary internet files and history... all to no avail.

Ditto.

Now that's the best idea on the table at this moment, since it seems rather likely that CM modified their home page on the other side and made it inaccessible to Windows 98 users. I wonder what percentage of business they are losing as a result.

Any volunteers?

Indeed, it was very nice of the contributors to this thread who took time out of their days to help others. Thank you all!

Hey, Gauge...ever do tech support IRL?  Sounds like it...another acronym we had was PEBKAC.

I'm thinking a good scan, defrag, turning off all unused stuff in the background, and updating the browser.  Personally, my machine will load the CM pages fine, but after a few refreshes, the progress bar will only go halfway, then just hang.  If I quit out of IE, then launch again, no problems.

< shrug >

The thread that you started earlier this morning on this topic has just vanished. Taking into consideration that Budderflywings also saw an on-topic thread vanish... my guess is that the CM administration has become aware of the problem, and doesn't want it plastered all over the forums.

I've been fully loading the home page and all subsequent pages on the other side for two years without a problem. The trouble all started yesterday.
With a system much newer than your's, AMD Duron, XP Pro SP 2, 1.30 GHz, 256MB RAM, running a downgraded version/aka not the latest(version 7) of Internet Explorer 6.0 and using wireless network cable to access ... i've experienced the 'white page but done loading' TOO.

Just knowing that much ... it wouldn't seem that the choice of which browser or Windows version you use is the cause. It does seem like a change in the code for the collarme homepage could be the cause of  issues. Otherwise, others with the latest versions of IE and latest Windows installed wouldn't be so likely to be experiencing the same.

Regardless, your system is quite outdated. Even without the problems recently experienced with loading that collame homepage ... you'd do well to upgrade as well as you can. Internet Explorer does have higher requirements for RAM and such etc ect ..... compared to FireFox, but you don't even have the minimal requirement for EITHER. While a browser like firefox may help your situation to some degree ... you do not need a new browser so much as you need a new PC and/or more RAM.

Regardless, if i were you, i'd look into aquiring a new computer (brand new or used-but-new-to-you with the latest of Win XP and more than the minimal in RAM ...... or upgrading what you have as well as it will allow (though on a 10 year old PC ... i can guess that the possibilities are quite limited due to the outdated hardware on that system). At the very least .... if you can not aquire a new or newer PC, you should seriously look into installing another stick of 32 RAM (no idea how many slots you have available... if more than two, 3 of 32 RAM for a total of 96 RAM would help even more, obviously). It's not difficult to install additional sticks of memory yourself ... it's VERY simple to do.

Other than that, and other than the obvious basic system maintenance needing to be done, and other than it being important for you to uninstall or prevent processes which are not needed from running at startup .... an additional suggestion from which your PC may benefit:  run a registry cleaning program (i need to do so myself, and need to find time to locate a new free one of those ---not shareware or freeware--- and have a good source, just no time right now and i can't post that URL here [;)]).

Available space on drive D: 1629MB of 1629MB (FAT)

OK... before we go much further with this system and our stroking Mozilla/Firefox as the saviour browser... if she has dial-up and then launches Firefox her poor system is going to have a coronary.

This comes directly from the Mozilla website:

Minimum System Requirements
  • 233 Mhz processor
  • 64 MB of RAM
  • 50 MB of free disk space
  • Microsoft Windows 98

Mozilla Recommends
  • 500 Mhz processor
  • 256 MB of RAM
  • 100 MB of free disk space
  • Microsoft Windows XP

If she tries to use AOL along with Mozilla the little computer gremlins are going to sit on top of her machine and laugh until tears. So... No more of that from me anyway....

I will repeat that this system is old and really will not be able to run most applications including new AOL software etc. If you have a chance to get another computer, take it. There was a generous offer made and I would go for it, honestly. If you have the money though, go get a new computer. What you own is really not worth upgrading, it would cost more than the machine is worth and you could put the money to better use. There is no sense throwing good money away, but if that is what you want to do... go for it!  [:)]

Actually, no... I haven't. I am not even quite sure what IRL is... but that's OK... I am not much of an Internet geek as I am just a computer geek.

windchymes -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/10/2006 7:00:19 AM)

I believe Microsoft is phasing out several earlier versions of Windows, including 98, and either Me or 2000?  It might be a good idea to just bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows XP.

I am having the same problem with only one of my computers, but instead of paranoid screaming of suppression, how about the fact that was a duplicate thread of sorts, and this one had many more comments so they kept this one?  Why not plaster it everywhere, what do the owners of this FREE SITE have to lose?  Another said they wondered how much business they were losing....since when is free business, and what is the cost when you lose it?  I think probably they kept this one because it had more comments, but, it was a thread about the exact same subject.
Edited for typo
