Do you mean it cramps like you are clutching something?  I sometimes get that after golf,  after heavy yard work, and after holding a book in my hand for a long time like on the treadmilll. I just pry my fingers apart and stretch them and they are ok 'til next time. Muscle cramps can be caused by potassium, sodium or calcium deficiencies or by dehydration.

I'd suggest you see a neurologist if this is a continuing problem.  There is a test called EMG to determine if there is a nerve or muscle problem.  My legs and feet cramp quite often as I have 4 herniated cervical discs which affect muscles/nerves in all four extremities.  Perhaps you can be prescribed a non-addictive muscle relaxer such as Skelaxin for a time.

Perhaps you could try to explain what is occurring utilizing more descriptive phraeseology?  Do you mean that your hand suddenly contracts like you are squeezing a ball?  Is there any numbness, or tingling anywhere, anytime including during sleep?  Pain--in which fingers?  Is it both hands or one?  When you work out, are you lifting--barbells, dumbells?  Trying to strenghen your hands with a "squeeze" device?  More information is essential.

Just a shot in the dark here, I get the same thing when doing certain repeat movement actions. The muscles are spasming and cramping. Probably because with the hand weights you are gripping the bar of the weight tightly when actually you are supposed to pretty much just balance the weight in your hand. This is causing you to strain the muscles in your hands, which in turn will cause cramping.

BUT.... I am not a doctor and if it persists, go see a doctor and make sure you are not causing yourself nerve damage and or muscle damage.

edited cause it's late and i'm tire and having spelling issues. oh wait lol i always have those

If your fingers are going numb/tingling, except for the baby and half of the finger next to it, odds are you have Carpel Tunnel. See a doc, who can either do a test themselves, or send you to a neurologist.

If you don't have numbness, see a doc anyway. You do not want to permanently damage your hand or muscles... especially if it's preventable!

If it is intermittent (recurring but not continuous) pain/discomfort/cramping there is a strong possibility you have strained a tendon or ligament.  Unless you completely stop doing the activity that is causing the problem they won't heal.  Maybe not what you want to hear I know.
Since you say that your right hand is not having the same problem I bet that is your dominant hand and those tissues (muscles, tendons, etc) are stronger than the ones in your left (non dominant hand).

Bottom line if your body indicates by cramping/pain or discomfort that a certain activity is causing problems common sense should be followed:  stop the activity for a week or two.  If the pain goes away then start back on the activity.  If the pain starts again or never goes away during the time of rest see a doctor.  Your body won't lie to you and it is telling you by way of the pain/cramping that something is not right.  Save yourself  longterm damage and listen to what your body is telling you.  Macho points for toughing it out mean nothing when you are crippled or disabled later in life from ignoring something that could have been fixed when it first happened.
