Pain and its evolution and meaning in my life.

In my own journey into this lifestyle I have thought a great deal about pain and how it has been integrated into my life. And although I see my slavery some what separate from my feels around pain. I am often curious about others perception about it.

Admittedly when I first started in the SM scene I used sensation play (pain) as more of a recreation; chance to escape the trappings of daily life for a very short period of time. It seemed to give me the release I needed in much the same way that extreme sports might for others. Over time I began to shape pain in different ways, in that I began to see it as a chance to share something special with someone I was fond of. From there it took on a more spiritual flavor.

As I did some research on various ancient cultures I found that pain was a transition into something else a right of passage of sorts and I guess that is where I am at currently? Each new scene seemed to transcend me to a new level in my slavery to another.

I find this an interesting topic and was wondering what others think

I love everything about pain except the pain part.

I think, like most intense experiences, we like to be shocked from our normal selves in order to gain a better understanding of who we are, we like to be forced to know who we are, and that means including out on the extremes.  Some people climb mountains, some people become philosophers, some people drive spikes into their skin- it's all a love affair with torture and existence.

Hi ziggy,

you and your Mistress will be at SWLC again, right? ;-) Ya'll still need to make it out to a Butchmanns...they address this very topic.

I'm finding more and more that I seperate sadism and masochism from the Ds and Ms roles we play. Now, I see that pain, while it does have its erotic and fun side, can be used as a tool for cathartic experiences (such is taught at Butchmanns). A scene won't, and doesn't have to, always lead to an epiphany or catharsis. But, given that you go into the scene with intent, it can. The notion of a "Rite of Passage" isn't too far off from the "earning your leathers" idea. Some have also mentioned a book called "The Ordeal Path" written by Raven somebody. It looked interesting, but I haven't picked up a copy yet.
