Greetings..~smiles~

A friends wife was just dx with CH this evening after a 3 day battle. He was on his way home with her in the passenger side slumped and demerol'd to a zombie state. It was very sad to hear because has suffered from CH for 20yrs now, and it has been a nightmare that would not wish on anyone.

Just was wondering if there were any other head  bangers out here in the life, and how if at all you have coped with things.

Sends alot of hugs to

Well Wishes

They are Cluster Headaches. Primarily a male affliction and about 10x's the pain of a migraine that comes in cycles lasting months at a time with anywhere from 1 to 20 headaches/day lasting from 15mins to hours.

Cluster headaches come with a history of people jumping off buildings to their death.  They are extremely painful.  There is a fairly new treatment that's a nasal spray called zolmitriptan (Zomig) made by AstraZeneca that sounds promising.  I'd suggest finding a headache specialist at a large medical center.

Starshine,

CH is a problem for alot of people, and not just men!! I've been getting them for about 6yrs.

I find the best way to deal with them is a little massaging pen from OSIM, and apply it to the side of the nose just beside the eyes.

http://shop.osim.biz/shop/details.asp?prodID=1436&pID=1770

if you want to see what i mean, but it has to be used just as the headaches hit...otherwise just wait it out!

Thankyou for replying those that have CH. After 20yrs of these, lots of docs, scans, drugs, diet, O2, wall banging, and more ER trips than cares to mention..finds the best thing that works for this girl is naked infront of AC, and cool cloths. Chilling to point of shiverring doesn't stop it but helps cope with the pain.  O2 straight from a tank worked for about the first 5yrs then puttered out.

Have been free for a year now but before that the cycle lasted 5months (shorter than normal..usually 8-16 month cycles), and think it was of the Indomethacin that might of cut the cycle down but didn't stop actual daily attacks in a week like was reported to.

yes..that is why said: It is primarily a male affliction meaning that it hits any gender but more males than females. This is for CH. For females it is CPH (Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania)..which produces much the same symptoms and pain as CH..but affects more females than males.

Believe it might be the fact that a nougat hasn't been reported as a cause for committing suicide..but thats just a guess.

Since the brain itself feels no pain, headache pain comes from the tissues around the brain, the attaching structures at the base of the brain, and the muscles and blood vessels of the scalp, face and neck. Cluster headache pain may be related specifically to blood vessel dilation or to inflammation of nerves behind the eye.

The pattern of cluster headache attacks earn their name: episodic cluster headaches consist of active periods that may last days or even months, during which headaches occur in "clusters" every other day or as frequently as eight times per day. Headache-free remissions can last months or years.

During active periods, factors that may trigger attacks include alcohol, high altitude, air travel, bright sunlight, exertion or foods, especially foods high in nitrites. Drugs that dilate the blood vessels, such as nitroglycerine and various blood pressure medications, can also set off an attack. When the cycle is inactive, these triggers usually have no effect.

Cluster headache pain generally resides on one side, behind or around the eye or in the temples, and may be accompanied by hyperactivity, congestion, swelling and eyelid drooping or swelling. The pain may fluctuate before it subsides. Care focuses on controlling pain in acute attacks, preventing recurrences and minimizing the impact on daily functioning. Treatment usually consists of pain relief and headache prevention medications, but may include nerve injection, radio-frequency therapy or oxygen therapy.

Cluster Headaches most commonly occur in men from 20 to 40. People with cluster headaches tend to be sociable, active and responsible, so cluster headaches are sometimes called "the executive headache." Because these headaches can be very disruptive, patient education and support groups are often helpful and comforting.

My ex suffered from them. Less after he quit drinking. For him , they were triggered by tension headaches so when he felt them coming on he dealt with the trigger points. Basically I got really good at massage and reflexology since doing both could stop the headaches.

Greetings..~smiles~

nods..uses the pressure points and just general area's of top of head, behind ear, temple, and neck. These are thankfully episodic but the daily attacks while in cycle have significantly increased over the years, and often am afraid it might at one point become a chronic thing. Also can not tolerate to be in any position but crouching..thinks this is a compensation due to the difficulty breathing caused by the congestion and pain.  Very seldom ever drinks and definetely never during a cycle..no chocolate either. As far as any real possible trigger for a cycle start is still aloof because there just never seems to be any rhyme or reason to them.

Well Wishes

I honestly found that if I catch the headach fast enough if I put nipple clamps on (Im not kidding) it reduses the head ach and while they are on my head doesnt even really hurt at all.. Me and Master found this out by mistake :)... but there is a science behind it. Our nerves can only transmit so much sensation and the stronger of the 2 wins

Well I've had a continuous headache for the last 4 years, maybe 5 years, don't know, remember, care enough to figure it out, time is an illusion anyway I remember far past, recent past, now, anyway I digress, I've had a continuous headach that likes to increase and decrease in intesity, on a scale from 1 to ten currenly its a 2 increasing, and it likes to move around my head, when I started reading this it was in the temples, now its in the back of the head.  I use excedrine most of the time to keep the headache down to workable level, but it doesn't always work.  The times when it's about a 7+ I take zomig.  The problems with zomig is that I trade the head pain for body pain, it hurts to move.  I already have enough body pain, I don't need to add to that. (another posting).  I've got 2 CAT scans, 2 MRIs, spinal tap, sleep test, and a bunch of other test.  I do believe the Dr. labeled the headaches as cluster, don't remember, that doc packed up and left the state, too bad, he was alright.

I have Cluster Headaches and Migraines,I have suffered as long as I can remember.
Most times if I can take meds Maxalt or Imitrex for the migraines I can get rid of them.I use ice packs( I bought the ones that are gel and mold to your head) and laying down in a dark cool room with no noise for both types.

A note about the ice packs dont leave them on too long and make sure they are wrapped in a towel so you dont have too much cold at once, doc said something about frostbite.

Edited to add: its been hell,I have lost jobs due to them.I also dont wish them on anyone. The pain is much more intense with a CH and last longer usually for Me anyway.

I also have cluster headaches and migraines. It makes me a whole lot of fun when they strike.

The Zomig is pretty helpful- I combine it with Imitrex or codeine when they get bad. Or, if they are really bad, to the ER with me! The pain is so intense, I can see why people would commit suicide- I've asked many an ER doc to kill me so I don't have to suffer. They have yet to oblige, something about malpractice.

Starshine-
As far as coping goes, there are the above-mentioned medications, and otherwise, I avoid white wine, which seems to be my biggest trigger. Making sure I get enough sleep is also important to me- I noticed a while ago that my headaches seem vaguely connected to the cycles I experience in mood if I let my bipolar disorder get out of control.

Some people have had success from taking Depakote, too. But it's not a walk in the park, so I would save that if it can be avoided. It helped me with multiple things (headaches and bipolar), but I almost died from liver toxicity, so it's one to be carefully monitored and a bit wary of.

Take care-

another treatment for cluster headaches is using oxygen via mask...the thinking is the headaches are caused bu a lackof oxygenand the inhalationof oxygenhelps to reduce the incidenceof headaches

My daughter suffers from migraines several times a month. They became worse while she was pregnant and was reluctant to take prescription drugs to ease the pain. I went online and did some research looking for a possible home remedy that would be both safe and effective and came upon Sinus Buster. I ordered some, gave it to her and when she used it the headache miraculously eased off and after another use, went away. It will give you are real "zing" when you use it but becomes less shocking after you use it a while. (might also be good for some bdsm play?) lol Anyway, check it out, it might work for you. www.sinusbuster.com

I've suffered from bad headaches for years, and even had the odd optical migraine. Several years ago I started taking daily magnesium to stop heart palpitations. Well not only does the magnesium greatly eliminate the palps, I noticed after several months that my headaches had decreased significantly. A little further reading and I found a medical opinion (don't have the reference now, sorry), that 70% of the N. American population is magnesium deficient because it gets processed out of our foods.

Mg's an important trace element for nerve functions and as long as you take it with some calcium I don't think it can do any harm (taken in appropriate amounts), although you should probably check with your doc/pharmacist first.

Good luck.
