And I think those were the ONLY out-of-conference victories over Top 25 opponents that the Big Ten has had. I've never claimed that Louisville is better than Ohio State or Michigan.

Here are the updated records vs. the AP Top 25 for all the major conferences:

Pac Ten: 8-23
SEC: 9-30
Big Twelve: 7-24
ACC: 7-29
Big East: 3-14
Big Ten: 3-26
CUSA: 0-11
Sun Belt: 0-11
WAC: 0-11
Mid-American: 0-10
Mountain West: 0-8

Look at the Big Ten! Anyway, this list puts the Big East right around the level of the ACC, which everyone thought was going to dominate football when Miami and Virginia Tech fled there, but has been relatively puny this year. I agree about one thing though. The Big East needs to schedule more games against Top 25 opponents. And the conference has a few too many Temples and Connecticuts and South Floridas.

Well, as long as you were talking about top 25 wins, the best of them (out of conference) for the Big East was beating Maryland who is currently ranked 23. For the Big Ten there was Ohio State beating Texas and Michigan crushing ND, both ranked in the top 10.

Sure, the SEC is going to show more wins against top 25 teams because 5 of them are ranked and they all have at least one loss to other teams in the conference. So I don't think it makes sense to assume wins over top 25 teams shows conference strength -- if Penn State was ranked the Big Ten count would go up by 3, but only because Penn State lost to the other 3.

heh, I think the Looeyville fans would agree because USF clobbered them last year and for all we know they will again next week -- they play pretty good defense too, better than WVU, and their offense averages just 5 fewer points per game than Rutgers.

But Temple is out of the Big Least now -- they're going to the MAC, I think.

Yeah, I agree, the real important stat would be the conference's record against the out-of-conference Top 25, but I don't have the patience to sort through all the games and come up with those numbers. They must be online somewhere, but I don't know where.

Tough out of conference games are great, but not really the same as tough conference rivalry games against teams with roughly equal talent. If West Virginia added Florida to the schedule (for example), that would be one of the biggest games of the year for West Virginia, but would barely be on the radar screen of big games, for a school like Florida. It's just not apples vs. apples.

To me, adding a few teams to the Big East that are consistently good would be much better. They don't have to be powerhouses, just teams that are always good, solid teams and have the same talent level of Louisville, West Virginia and Rutgers (although some would arge that Rutgers doesn't have the talent level of the other two). This would add a few rivalry road games to the schedule each year ... teams that have to be played every season. Even those games with Temple and South Florida would become much tougher, because they fall further down the pecking order of important games. The further a game falls on a team's pecking order, the better chance you have that the players will spend more time going to parties instead of thinking about the game ... and end up falling flat.

Anyone that doesn't think this is a factor in college football, has never dated a college athlete!

I don't know about West Virginia (though if Florida ever played West Virginia, it would be a big game for Florida too), but Louisville has offered home-and-home series to SEC teams, and has been repeatedly rebuffed. As I said, I'm still looking for the source for this, but it may not be public; I heard this on the ESPN college report and I'm sure it's true. So it's not ONLY the Big East's fault that top teams aren't playing them.

I agree that the Big East needs some more teams to be considered a deep conference (in football, of course--in basketball it's clearly tops in America), but I'll also say that Virginia Tech and especially Miami look a little stupid right now. I think Miami would be about the sixth-best team in the Big East this year; VT would be somewhere around No. 3.

West Virginia woudn't be on the top seven of big games Florida plays every year. I admire your loyalty to the teams in your area, but please.

I don't doubt for a minute that Big East teams have tried to get home and home's with teams from power conferences. I don't doubt that these teams have passed. Teams from power conferences don't want to play out of conference games with good teams from weaker conferences. They are trap games, for exactly the reason mentioned above. That's why you see teams like Texas and Ohio State play each other, because each team has similar motivations and as much to lose and gain, as the other.

If Big East teams want better schedules, they will need to offer two-for-one games to power conference teams.

West Virginia is currently ranked 8th in the country in the AP poll, and 7th in the USA Today poll. If you really think Florida faces seven tougher opponents than West Virginia every year, then your athlete boyfriend hasn't been giving you very good information about college football.

I think it will be interesting to see if the Big Least teams can afford to keep coaches like Petrino, Rodriguez, and Schiano. Before Looeyville moved into that conference they lost John L. Smith to Michigan State and then Auburn flirted with Petrino shortly after that. Schiano's name has been mentioned as a candidate for the thUg U job because he was an assistant there before, so he knows he's a hero where he is while coCanes fans will make death threats if he ever loses 3 games in a season.

Anyway, I bet their paychecks are considerably smaller than they could get at schools having bigger stadiums and in conferences with richer tv contracts. I'd be surprised if they don't get feelers from Michigan State and thUg U this year, and even more surprised if at least one of them isn't hired away within 5 years.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Former NFL coach Butch Davis will return to the sidelines as coach at North Carolina, which is 1-9 and hasn't beaten a Division I-A team this season.

He will replace the fired John Bunting, the school said Monday. The hiring had been widely expected the past week after Davis' name rose to the top of the list of candidates.

Here are the updated records as of this week for the six major conferences:

Pac-10: 8-20 .286
SEC: 13-36 .265
ACC: 12-35 .255
Big 12: 5-22 .185
Big East: 4-18 .182
Big Ten: 4-28 .125

The ACC has taken a big jump up. They don't have any powerhouses at the top, but they're very deep (six of the twelve teams in the conference have 8 or more overall wins).

Purdue's loss to Hawaii is not good for Big Ten fans.

Oh, and I really wish they would break this shit down into in-conference and out-of-conference, but they don't.

Speaking of Hawaii... I was surprised to learn Jerry Glanville is in charge of the defense there; him and his old Run and Shoot buddies doing what they love, in paradise, and getting paid for it. Must be tough.
