According to the Dark Side, we are to use our hate, anger, and rage as fuel to accomplish our goals. As fuel, anger is used to push you to work harder in the gym, on the job, and such. The flaw in this is what happens when there's nothing to be angry at any more? For how long can a person do nothing but live with the past even after everything about it has changed?

Without anger and content, would one cease to stop pushing themselves? How hard is it to stay mad forever? If one needed to use hate as a power source, it sounds like you would need something new to hate later on.

When you find yourself no longer being angry, what's the alternate power source?

I don't carry much in the way of anger in me.  I used to.  I used to carry rage in me.  I was just in a conversation with my brother the other day in fact, and the subject of anger came up.  He asked me how I express it.  I explained that anger carries a lot of energy with it (adrenaline, among other emotional energy) and it has to go somewhere.  Keeping it pent up is unhealthy for that reason, and can cause illness.  I believe it's the adrenaline caused by anger that gets worked off at the gym, or to be used, as you have said as a "power source" to push people forward.  I'm not sure it's the healthiest means of a power source, but if you have the energy in you from it, by all means, work it out!

I don't need anger to push me forward toward accomplishing my goals.  Master pushes me plenty in that regard!  Aside from that, it's really all about desire, motivation and drive.  How badly do you want something?

I work full time, go to school, work to please my Master, take care of  my mother's finances since my dad just died, am struggling with a stressful divorce (is there any other kind), and have been dealing with health issues for the last few months.  Anger does not keep me going, but my energy and strength does.  I believe anger would actually hold me back, as it would cloud me from seeing clearly.  I keep going because I must; because Master expects it of me; because I want to keep moving my life forward.

I'm generally angry at the world and its injustices which fuel me though I am also passionate about what I do which is also an energy source. When I'm feeling content I rarely get any work done of quality and sometimes don't even work, prefering to socialise. Luckily I work for myself and set my own schedule so I don't have a boss to answer to.

I've been angry with a woman for several years now and that shows no sign of lessening, I would even go as far as to say I hate her at times. Ironically she once accused me of using her to drive my work which is true. I've also been accused by one woman I was having a relationship with of not using her so I guess I can't win on that score.

I dislike being content because I feel like I'm vegetating when I'm content but there is enough going on in my life and the world, not to be in that state too often. Though I do prefer passion to hate and anger, I certainly lower myself to use anger and hate to get some work done.

That is why anger motivation never works. Instead, you go to the gym to make yourself healthy. You succeed in your job to get a better pay, or in services...to help others feel better about themselves. The only time i have found anger to be a good thing and productive is if it to make a wrong right, or to help get over something. I usually encourage my friends after sometime to greave over a relationship to hit a pissed off phase. This only because it is part of the greaving process. Get pissed off and let it go.

Hmmm Someone has watched Star Wars one too many times. Maybe it is time to learn to use the Force for good. :)

Firstly - you do realise its just a film yes? Based on Japanese samurai stories and mythological models? just need to check that.

Secondly, I feel one has to go back to the roots of Star Wars (as above) and the buddhism which informed the samurai originals to make sense of it.

In Buddhism, there is no contentment aside from freedom from desire, and life is essentially suffering; even the greatest pleasures become suffering if pursued. Suffering leads to fear, hate and anger as Yoda surmised.

The Jedi are those who follow the classical path to freedom from desire. The Sith meanwhile seek to cultivate the natural process of fear, hate and anger in order to achieve freedom from desire by way of fulfilling all desire through the power their anger brings them.

Now, am I sure it was just a film....?

If anger is your main "power source" you have greater issues than worrying abut what to do when that tank runs dry.

Hmmmm, the best things I have done in life did not come from a place of anger.

I would ask if this is a goal of yours? It is not one for me, I dislike being angry.

Love is the most powerful motivation

But that is just me.

Staying angry all the time is bad for your blood pressure. Anger has its place and its uses, but I dont think it should ever be a constant "power source"...

I am rarely angry, but I would not consider myself an unmotivated person. I strive to do better in life because it makes me feel better, not because I feel angry about the place I am in. I have many dreams and goals that are completely unmotivated by anger, and I have accomplished many things that I am proud of that had nothing to do with anger.

I would agree with those who say Love is the most powerful motivation. That doesnt always mean love for another person, either. Loving myself is what pushes me to improve, Love for my concept of Diety is what keeps me strong through hard times, and Love for the world and all those in it is what makes me want to extend my hand to others.

Fangs, if you need a new power source to replace "anger" how's about "selfishness?"
It is good for the blood pressure, it motivates people, it gets you what you want, and it's fun and hurts no-one else usually.
Anger is too much work!
And, "love"? That's a state of being not a power source.
Selfishness! That's where it's at, Baby!

I find anger only is a good short term motivator, though I could imagine scenarios that would leave me angry for a very long time I've not personally experienced them.

The problem with anger is it tends to migrate in and out of depression if one focuses on it to long.

I generally use hope as a substitute for anger as a motivating force. Anger emerges in me when I feel trapped or feel I have been wronged. Hope works well because it is based upon where you are going. So, instead of being angry about where things are now, I can be hopeful that things will get better if I apply myself, and if you get a little history of improvement, it becomes easier to believe in a better outcome in the future.

So, I guess faith that I can make things better, can motivate where anger would do a similiar job.

I do anger rather easily but it fades quickly, so it wouldn't drive me for any long term goals.

Need, yup, Hope is good too as in , "I hope I get approved for that new car or truck I want or  I hope I hit the lottery!"
Hope comes from Selfishness and that's a "good" thing!
Even the psycho-babble people tell people to be "selfish!"
And from "Selfishness" comes another fueler, "Happiness!"
Getting that new car or truch also helps other people because you're helping create jobs for people!
I'm telling ya's, there's a lot to be said for that "Selfishness" thing!
"Anger" is a "negative", "Selfishness" is a "positive"!
If more people were "Selfish" this would be a much better world.

I don't know, I am rarely angry and cannot say that I hate anyone nor ever have.

Anyone that considers love to be a state of being rather than a power source has a very different definition of love than I do.

It would take writing a book to even attempt to define my power source. It is deeply spiritual but not religious at all. Some would say it is love, others would say it is where love begins.

LaTig, "love" gets way too much unearned credit for things!
It's like a fallback position for a lot of people when they can't think of anything else to say.
Now, it's getting cold so go out and buy yourself that expensive fur coat you've been wanting!
Sleep naked in it!

Popeye, shame on you for assuming what my definition of love is! Since you cannot even imagine what I mean when I say or type the word, you cannot be presumptious enough to say I fall back on it for something that is otherwise undefinable without hours of typing, much of which you may not even understand.

When I say the word love I am not assigning it the often misunderstood version, lust. Or even a deeper version that many people feel towards family members. My definition is greater, more along the lines of what was described in one of the most common books used by christianity.

As for fur coats, I already have several (though they are Tissavel) and don't need another. I do sleep naked but prefer to do so in nice cool cotton sheets with a down comforter.

Anger, hatred and rage are not the only forces we use to better ourselves, our lives or generally do well. As someone said before love is a great force to be driven by. For example i love my daughter with all her heart and stive to do what is best for her through love. In my opinion achieving something from anger, hatred or rage can end up being a bitter sweet process and result.
