In my lovely little world of ME, a submissive is someone who still controls many aspects of their life (finances, friends, etc.), has the 'right' to negotiate scenes with thier Dom/me, and isn't in a D/s or whatnot relationship 24/7. A slave on the otherhand is 24/7, and doesn't have control over many aspects of their life... nor do they have as much 'right' to negotiate... they are there for the Dom/mes pleasure, whatever that happens to be.

Hi everyone, been here a little while but this is my first time posting. And please forgive what I'm sure is the appalling naïvete of my question.

In the context of this site, what is the difference between a submissive and a slave?

Thanks in advance.

You'll get as many answers as there are people. What do YOU think is the difference, if any.

My standard reply...a slave is a submissive who self-identifies as a slave, a submissive is a slave who self-identifies as such.

my perspective amounts to: the difference between a slave and a bottom or sub is ongoing negotiations. For me, as a slave my negotiations stopped once i accepted Master's slave collar. He knows me well, i trust Him completely. He commands, i obey - period. i see a sub or a bottom as one who maintains their negotiating rights and may or may not have agreed to complete obedience. It is a very individual thing however, but that's my perspective for what it's worth.

That may be your definition but it isn't mine.  Slaves do not have to live 24/7 and slaves can negotiate rights in the beginning or when appropriate. I have control over many aspects of my life. Dynmaics are different in all D/s and M/s relationships. Nothing is in stone. I obey my Master and live by his rules but I am not a mindless drone, maybe some like it that way. It isnt our way. I see many subs who are lost, mindless drones.

It comes down to that everyone's defintion is different. Nothing is black or white in this lifestyle.

I don't think of slaves as being mindless drones (if someone wants that, I'd suggest taking up bee keeping... lots o' drones there! lol). A slave simply gave up more of their rights & is owned... but I think there are quite a few other threads on that subject.

As you said sweetnurse, my definition is simply mine...*grins* It'll likely change with time, as most things do, but for now that's how I see it. Nice pic btw... is the horse a stallion or mare or ??? Beautiful, regardless. (You too ).

This is something that, like porn and love, almost everyone will have a different answer for.

My answer is that it's a mentality. I feel owned though there is not a collar around my neck. I very much belong to my dominant but I am not a slave. I would say that a slave is less likely to talk back to her master then a sub is to her dom. I feel like I have more choices and more say in what goes on. I submit but I am equal in my submission if that makes any sense.

As you can see zen, there is no set standard that defines the difference between a sub and slave.  Most call themselves whatever they feel is appropriate within the context of their relationship.  With some slaves, most of their life is controlled;  the same with some who call themselves subs.  Some slaves still hold various freedoms;  as do some subs.  And despite popular belief, not all subs constantly renegotiate their rights.  Some do, some don't.

Some will say that a submissive is not owned, whereas a slave is.  But how about the single slaves that advertise on CM?  They are not owned yet called themselves slaves.  Do you see what i mean?  There are no absolutes on these definitions.

For some reason, there are many who are just 'chomping at the bit' to get a collar so they can call themselves 'slave'....but a collar doesn't automatically make one a slave either.  A sub on here for 2 months takes a collar from a dom who's been on here for 2 months, and all of a sudden, she's a slave and he's a Master?  i guess that's what it will be by their definition....and that is exactly what i am saying.

So call yourself whatever you feel is appropriate for yourself.  And when you get a partner, i'm sure you will be whatever they call you :)
