This has probably been brought up before but I have a question about nipple piercings that some of you might be able to help with.

Both of my nipples are pierced, I had one done a couple years ago and it's doing just great, brings me a lot of joy.  But the other one I had done only a few months ago continues to get a tiny cyst on the same spot on one side.

I talked to my piercer and it turns out that it's a very common thing for new piercings that are in spots that get rubbed or pressed on a lot such as nipples(tight clothes, seatbelts), ears(headphones, hats), and genitals(tight clothes), etc.  They go away if you just put hot compresses on them.  The only problem is that this one keeps coming back.  I think that I'm sleeping on it, I like to sleep on my stomach and the side of my body that it's on and I'm not sure how to quit doing that or if maybe it's related entirely to another problem.  I stopped wearing really tight sports bras and have been otherwise caring for it.

Sorry, make myself more clear.

My question is, is there anything I can further do to ensure that it no longer acts up?  I'm trying to teach myself not to sleep on it, but perhaps someone knows of something else that can help?

I don't have any advice for you, I had my right nipple pierced and it got so badly infected i doubt i would ever get it repierced. I would suggest you talk to your doctor, that may sound silly but they would know what is causing the problem..good luck.

i had mine done about a month ago and one of them is bothering me, my GP said i should use salt soaks in warm water alternated with witch hazel soaks. the trouble is that some piercings will just always have overgrowth of tissue when healing, more common with cartilege (sp?), and they will almost always refuse to heal normally. i would suggest searching on BME website for similar experiences and advice, they even have a page where you can ask questions and the pro's will answer you, good luck
Sincerely,
wench

Sea salt soaks. Everytime you think about it and you can do it, do it. It will keep everything nice and washed and clean, and hopefully there won't be anything left to clog up and make a cyst.

What type of jewelry (metal, gauge, barbell vs CBR)?

Have you tried a jewelry change or a gauge-up?

when you get a "cyst" on a piercing it is called a cuiloid (I can't spell but it is pronounced key-loyd) and it is probably caused by an imperfction in your jewelry.  If you look at it closely I bet you wil find a nick it the metal from your piercer closing the jewelry up after putting it in.  It happens all the time, and just means you should replace the jewelry with something else.  Also alot of different things can affect a piercing (especially a nipple) like stress, sweat, pet fur and dander and just about everything else from the molecular structure of your tap water to temerature change.  I am willing to bet money that it is from a nick in the metal though. Oh, and make sure you wear surgical steel jewelry. One mrore thing, nipple rings can take up to a year and a half to heal completely, so maybe you just need more time, sea salt soaks, hot compresses and teatree oil.

A keloid is a scar, specifically, an overgrowth of scar tissue at the site of an injury (or in this case, an intentional break in the skin.)

whereas

A follicular cyst results from the accumulation of keratin that turns into the cyst in the dermis.  Cysts appear as
red bumps, or pimples, adjacent to the entrance of the piercing and produce a discharge of pus and blood. Hot compresses or soaking the piercing in hot salt water will encourage the cyst to drain. Hydrogen peroxide
gel can be used to dry-out follicular cysts.

The general rule of thumb is that if it HURTS, PUSSES, or BLEEDS -- it's NOT a keloid!

I'm sorry that the OP hasn't come back to feed more information into this discussion.  Two things that I'd recommend that both worked for me and have worked for others is:
1) Switch to titanium jewelry.
2) Gauging up the jewelry a size.  If you've got heavy breasts, the minimum gauge you should be in is a 10 or 12.  Anything smaller will feel like cheesewire and will only serve to work its way out of your body.
3) Again, if you have heavy breasts, or wear alot of restrictive clothing, you may want to switch from a CBR to a barbell (or a curved bar).  The rings tend to flip over and in a bra, they create pressure that will ultimately cause you to lose the piercing.

These are simple changes that are worth a try for the health of your breasts!

i had both nipples pierced 4 different times.. they are small and they could not get the positioning right the first 3 times..
i was having problems with my right nipple... but i switch to titanium bars. (bars being the key) i would alterate my aftercare, mornings salt soak, evenings medicated soap from piercer... and start moving jewelry..
