Depends on what you mean by "head on a platter."  Really, what are people "demanding"?  He can't be prosecuted for a crime, but I'm sure his career has taken a hit.  People have a right not to pay to see a comedian they now consider racist, you know.  Comedians get heckled all the time, and most figure out a way to get through it without calling people niggers and making references to lynching.

i'm told Kramer/Richards appeared near tears on Letterman as he apologised.  i wonder if he was upset over the racism he displayed or the hit to his career.  i wonder what he could possibly have been thinking.  i doubt i'd ever look at him the same again, yet part of me wants badly to forgive him.

There's the good and the bad right there - we have a Constitutional right to be able to think and say whatever we feel - yes, he had the right.  BUT, what a dumb ass - goodbye career and I bet Seinfeld re-runs take a hit too.  Just because you have the right to say stupid things doesn't mean you should.

On the flip side, everyone else has the right to be angry and tell him why they are angry and just how angry they are at him.

Bearlee -> RE: Kramer goes ballistic (11/21/2006 10:51:33 AM)

I find it interesting that apparently the guy was invited back to the same stage the following night; IF he gave the apology he agreed to make.  But they say it never came.  His apology only came on Letterman AFTER the public outcry.

Funny, I'm so against bigotry that when the guy I've been seeing informed me every man deserves a good woman, a good dog and a good Mexican...it finally tipped the scales.  I'm really not into politics so much...but I'm liberal as the dickens; I guess that doesn't mix well with a guy from the rabid right who thinks the bushes are great, the wars we're in are a good thing and rush limbaugh is nearly a god.  Gee...no wonder he looked apoplectic when I mentioned Faux news is a joke…and spelled it that way for him, too.

<Sigh>, yup…I’m single again…but that’s how I feel about such comments and behaviors:  Dealbreakers!

I don't have any black friends.

A "Satirist?" Is that what Al Franken calls himself?

I'd say both, along with inner frustration.  People are people. They get angry.

He was under a personal attack.  The way he handled it was inappropriate.

SOMEBODY started it all.

Even a dog will bite when it gets kicked around for long.  I wonder how Snoop dog would have handled it?

<Applauds the man>

Yup, name calling is pretty juvenile at best...done in an angry moment it makes one just look stupid; in my book.  Still, I’m of the opinion that when it’s done like that; a picture of ‘real feelings’ does come out…and I think bigotry is always ugly and I usually try to speak up against it when I see it.

Bearlee, so sorry to hear this; but it's better to have high standards and stick to them - it is easier to look at yourself in the mirror when you do.

I watched the segment on Letterman. I believe he was upset over the events but I cannot figure out if he was upset over his remarks or the outcry. He did seem visibly upset though. For whatever that is worth.

Well... truth be told, I was a little unhappy that on the phone he said we could work with my 30 extra pounds (by exercizing) but when we met he said I needed to loose 'a BUNCH of weight' and then he'd send me to get a breast reduction.  <sigh>  What girl wants to hear her breasts are too big???   LOL

Perhaps my standards are not really so high, huh?  <grinz>

Sinergy -> RE: Kramer goes ballistic (11/21/2006 12:23:10 PM)

Hello A/all,

I imagine part of the problem is that Michael Richards is an actor who is using his fame in acting to try his hand at stand up comedy.  Stand up comedy is brutal, and people like Jerry Seinfeld have experience dealing with the audience.

I would recommend that Michael Richards keeps his day job.

It is not like he needs the money; the four primary actors on the Seinfeld show made a million dollars an episode the last few years.  Or maybe he did not spend it wisely and it is all gone.

Just me, etc.

Sounds like he was looking for a completely different woman.

His mistake - it's what's on the inside that really counts; if the outside alo gets you all juicy, then that's just bonus!  :-D

there is quite a large uproar in the "black community" about this. a joke is a joke, but nothing in Richards wild rant had anything to do with comedy. sorry, but there is just no possible way anyone, black or white, but ESPECIALLY white, can make a graphic reference to lynching (the way more than a couple of my recent ancestors died...great uncle william comes to mind), and even pretend that it's something remotely funny.
btw, Richards was being heckled by a multitude of people...of all races. HE chose to single out two black patrons, for his own mysterious racist reasons. an apology from him is pointless and insulting...he has already made clear what he truly feels. there is no taking that back. the sad thing is he's going to damage the careers of everyone affiliated with Seinfeld. as a black person, there is no way i could ever watch the reruns of that show again, and others i've spoken to on message boards and irl feel the same way. who knows what it will do to jerry seinfeld's career now that he has come out in halfhearted support of this person. it's just a big mess all the way around. and it just goes to show you, what can lie beneath once you peel just one layer off. disgusting.

Here's the facts:

I saw a (short) vid of his act that night...hardly the whole show and it was fairly clear...he was not only lit...he stepped on a landmine during his gig...he was free associating...standing on stage searching for the next joke, feeling the audience...and he fucking read the audience about 900 katrillion light years wrong.

Times 11 gazillion billion.

I don't envy the guy...being a comedian is a tough racket.  The job of a comedian is to test your thinking to the point of either hilarity or ultimately a debate within your psyche.

The one thing you think is wrong, the one thing you're sure no one would ever guess about you....everyone in the entire country has already done in their shower....before you ever woke up.

That's the beauty of comedy.  It's often base.  It's usually insightful.  The reason you laugh is because it's true.

It's about you.

There were a lot of people (most, it appeared) that were laughing at his conjecture.  Go watch the video.  It's on TMZ.com.  He fed off of those responses...and yes, again, he appeared to be lit.  I'd guess either ecstasy or booze...or both.  He says he's a comedian.  I'd differ.  But he sure didn't do anything other than go where the crowd led him.

As for his comments;  Obviously they were wrong.

But if Richor Pryor had said them...we wouldn't be having this conversation.

How fucked up is that?

It is comedy for Christ's sake....it will always offend someone...if you don't like it, don't listen is my motto...I think he's hysterical!!!

The "comedy" had stopped by the time he started calling them the "n" word..... he wasn't trying to be funny, he was angry. Not much hysterical about that.

He wasn't anywhere close to tears.  He looked completely bewildered, but not really that penitent.

Funny thing is that I never watch Letterman.  That was probably the first time in months.  And just so you all know, the clips of the interview that the news programs are giving you are only a fraction of what he actually said.  The whole thing lasted about ten minutes.  It's worth it to find a clip in its entirety.

Level -> RE: Kramer goes ballistic (11/21/2006 4:55:19 PM)

Post #4 shows the majority of what happened.

And hi, "mom", hope you and yours are well. [:D]

Sorry, Level, I meant the clips of the Letterman interview.  The whole interview was a lot longer than the news leads you to believe.

We're doing great, by the way!  Thanks!  [:)]

I wonder if the fact that he's an actor had anything to do with how he 'seemed'?

(just a fast reply to this topic)

The more I hear about this..the more I think that if Richards doesn't get an apology from the heckler who started it..he need not apologize for his actions.

This falls under the "don't dish it out if you can't take it"  file of life.

According to the news report I saw...a comedian who was at the show was interviewed and reported the people were TALKING during his show ...NOT heckling Richards.  Another person said a singer can sing just fine alone, but a good singer needs to be able to sing even when the fights break out...

Anyway, did anybody see the commercial I saw last night for Seinfield re-runs on Thanksgiving day?  Too funny; showed the Kramer character's head on the turkey which was on a serving table...waving with his wing!  hmmmmm... maybe it was a cooked goose, come to think of it!
