FelinePersuasion -> Breath right strips, are they all they really claim to be? (11/24/2006 3:54:05 AM)

Does any one have any experince with these items? They claim to stop snoreing and to make a person breath better.

If they truely are effective great  but if not other than ear plugs or if it's offensive enough snoreing, sleeping elsewhere what are one's choices. I abohore snoreing and both my mate and my mom does, moms is so offensive as to keep my dad from sleeping in the room, and me either when we're all on vacation, and I am gettin next to no sleep tonight cause of my mates snoreing:(

Depends on the cause of the snoring. If the snoring is caused by minor blockage of the nasal passages, the Breathe-Right strips may help to hold the passage open and allow for clearer air passage. If the snoring is caused by excess mucus in the throat, the strips won't do anything. One thing that will help with that is a general cutting back of dairy in the diet, especially in the 4-6 hours before bed time. If the snoring is caused by the person being overweight, one of the only things that will help the situation is losing weight. Try gently nudging your partner or mom onto their side as it will releive excess weight on the chest. Trying the Breathe-Right strips can't hurt, but dont expect miracles.

When my man snores (which is rarely, generally only when he is congested or if he falls on his back while sleeping) a sharp poke in the side generally convinces him to roll enough to stop the snoring.
I don't know if that would work for everyone, but it's worth a shot (or a poke [:D] )

If they are good enough for NFL players, they are good enough for you!

No no no nonononononnonononnono...............

Nobody said to put breath right strips on your clit, they are talking about those little 3/4 inch square breath strips that you put on your tongue, you are not going to feel anything different pasting a  breath right strip down there.

I have sleep apnea and generally use a CPAP machine. It's a nuisance to move, so I don't generally bring it on short trips. Sometimes I remember to use Breathe-Right strips instead, and sometimes I don't. Honestly don't think I've noticed a difference.

If you Mom's snoring is that severe, she may want to have a sleep study done to see if she has apnea. The CPAP makes a world of difference!

I tried them before and they didn't work at all...but that was just my experience..if they offer help to others then cool..

Well that all depends on the reason for the snoring (as stated by another poster). If you have something like a deviated septum (unusually narrow nasal passage) which is readily blocked by the normal accumulation of mucous, then yes, maybe.

On a sidenote though - losing weight (they say as little as a 10% reduction) can have an amazing effect. I was in a relationship with a guy who snored so badly (and had sleep apnea) that I refused to sleep in the same room, let alone the same bed. He was all set up with HMO approval for a CPAP etc, but so badly wanted me to share his bed for other than just sex that he went on a diet. He went from 310 lbs to 240 in about 8 months, at the end of which he was so friggin' quiet sleeping that I couldn't even hear him breathing a lot of the time, and it had nothing to do with sleep apnea!!

Depends on the cause of the snoring. If overweight, that can indeed cause it. Allergies can cause snoring also, during hayfever season I take Claritin or I wake myself up snoring.

We recently raised the head of the bed a few inches. I don't think it's helping that much but you could try it. Other people I know swear by it in helping sinuses drain correctly allowing quieter sleep.

FR:  Anyone who snores so loudly they wake others should have a sleep study done immediately.  Obstructive Sleep Apnea is far more common than previously thought.  It is an incredibly debilitating disease which has effects that are much greater than merely making someone tired.  I cannot stress how important it is for someone with chronic snoring to have a full sleep study done.  If the problem is OSA or a related apnea issue, the breathe-right devices, other anti-snoring technologies, allergy pills and such are just band-aids.  dcnovice is 100% correct in his post, and it is critical that you have someone you care about tested.

Obesity and depression are common in OSA sufferers.  The obesity is part of a vicious cycle -- overweight people are prone to apnea.  They sleep so poorly that when awake all their brain can think to do to "wake" them is flood their cortexes with adrenalin.  Then they get hungry (adrenalin stimulates hunger) and eat too much...and still are sleep deprived.  THEN they go to bed, throw apneas, and the brain says "Oh oh...more adrenalin"....  The depression comes about because very very tired people are often depressed, unable to function and unaware that they are failing.

Apnea suffers also often have problems at work and in relationships because they are functioning so poorly.  It is also thought that as many as 25% of the automobile accidents of people over 40 are related to OSA.  "Cures" include the CPAP device, surgery, weight loss (in some but not all cases -- 30% or more of OSA sufferers have a BMI at or below the recommended level).   It appears to have genetic links, and while men suffer more often than women, it appears women may be seriously underdiagnosed.   Having your OSA cured or reduced is truly like being reborn.

I use the Breathe Right strips when I have a cold, or when my allergies are acting up. If my nose is stuffy, the minute I lie down, I can't breathe. It really limits my sleep, and makes me an instant mouthbreather, which for some people can cause temporary snoring. They work great for me, and I use the clear ones, so they aren't as noticeable.

But if someone is snoring all the time, and not just due to stuffed up nose, the strips will do absolutely nothing for the snoring. They should indeed have a sleep study done, because of the health risks of untreated sleep apnea.

Dc she swears up and down she don't snore, it's not her it's my father, I'm hearing things yada yada yada. she refuses to believe or admit she snores and that it's so loud as to be offensive. Truth is most nights during the summer dad's not in the bedroom. So I know for a fact it's not him.
