Sounds pretty promising actually.  Here's a few quotes from the story.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/27/tv.soap.transgender.ap/index.html

NEW YORK (AP) -- In a story unusual even for a soap opera and believed to be a television first, ABC's "All My Children" this week will introduce a transgender character who is beginning to make the transition from a man into a woman.

The show wasn't interested in doing something just to be sensational, she said. GLAAD and some transgenders were brought in as consultants in shaping the character, teaching the producers when it is appropriate to call a character "she" even before surgery, she said.
Damon Romine, a spokesman for GLAAD, said he hasn't seen the show yet but feels people involved were genuinely interested in telling the story with dignity. Emotions are so close to the surface in soap operas, and this story can serve a purpose by showing what transgenders go through, he said.
"I think it's groundbreaking and breakthrough television for daytime to put a spotlight on transgender people and tell their story," he said.

Kudos to them. A soap opera may not seem like the best way to do this at first thought, but if they do it well, I will be quite happy.

Is this a first in the US? If so I'm a bit surprised, as we're usually following you guys!

Have you ever heard of the Brit soap opera "Coronation Street" - one of the longest running programmes in the UK, at I guesstimate, about 40 years?

They had a TS woman come into the story a few years back, and for a while she was very much centre stage in what is a many threaded storyline. It was so wonderful to have such a character, with all her trials and tribulations occurring in a northern city (Manchester) where attitudes are not exactly 21st century, and most importantly for her to be so normal (if there is such a thing!). I dont watch the show so I'm not up with it that much, but she was on screen when I switched over the other day to wait for the show that follows it. It was a birthday party for one of the older characters, in the pub, and she was there and welcome - just another person, along with the guy she had taken up with a few years back.

I'm glad the US show you mentioned is doing something similar. Its important as a means of disseminating the message that trans people are not sexual deviants, drag queens and so on, and for everyone to see that they are just ordinary, every day people. I dont know how much of the growing acceptance there is in the UK, came from shows like Coronation Street which dealt so well with the whole subject, but I'm sure it helped a lot as the show is one of the most widely watched here.

In a related note, Days of Our Lives has announced that several people on their set will begin to make the transistion from over-emoters to actual actors. "We should see a lessening of maniacal laughter, deer caught in the headlights looks, and feigned disinterest when being told our previously unknown twin is being help captive on an isalnd", show spokesman Gern Blanston said.

Depending on how audiences accept those changes, Blanston also said that producers may begin having Stefano Demara use a different accent each week, and have Dr. Marlena Evans wear her old Electra Woman outfit.

Kidding aside, hopefully the storyline goes on without too much hell-raising. People are people.

Do people actually watch soap operas?

Lashra -> RE: Transgendered character on a soap opera (11/28/2006 4:46:41 AM)

Oh yes meatcleaver they certainly do. In fact they have a huge following of people from different walks of life. My parents both watch them daily and they arrange their daily schedules so that they don't miss the "stories".

I personally do not like them. I think they are pretty mindless and more along the lines of "porn operas"[;)]

I use to be a big time "Days Of Our Lives" groupie (laughs). I have went to 3 conventions- use to actually tape every episode...I began watching it when I was 13 years old back in 1985 and stopped really following it in 2000...things got to modern, alot of new young characters and I lost interest..My heart will always be with Peter Reckell though (Bo)>....omg he's so fine!!![;)]

my grandmothers both used to watch the soaps, so my belief was that the more conservative folks maybe watched them as a way of having some 'naughty' excitement in their lives. i never got into them at all and was more than amused when my friends in 8th grade would have to run home for General Hospital.
With that in mind, this could be a way for some more conservative people to have an introduction to the trans world in the safety and comfort of their own homes. Depends on how the program does it, though.

...i always used to consider Star Trek, and its many iterations, as my soap operas......less 'ohmigod he's your long lost twin'....more 'ohmigod he's your long lost alien from another dimension only eviller'...........

I did a little channel flicking today, something I have never done before even though I have about 50 cable channels and came across a soap played out in Santa Barbara but it never got out of the somewhat flimsy scenery which threatened to collapse at any moment along with the acting. One can see that this is where failed actors end up before they have to get a proper job. I also came across a raunchy south American soap, I'm not sure which country it came from, it was south American Spanish with Dutch subtitles and plenty of wobbly boobies every five minutes in scenes of high passion and drama. The actresses couldn't act but with their assets they didn't need to. (Mental note: Must check out this one again!)

Does this mean that they will stop dieing and then come back to life when they need a rating boost? Or be possessed by evil thing? I hope so.

Actually, i don't care how they do it. As long as we are teaching the masses the reality of something, i think it is fucking awesome. :)

No, most actors are possesed by an evil thing, lust for fame, and as long as Hollywood can make a buck, death shall ever be temporary. [;)]

I lost major amounts of brain matter doing this but I sat through the episode to see what AMC created.

Lady Ellen, I prefer other UK shows such as Benny Hill, and an old show I found recently by accident on cable called "Are You Being Served?"...true classics, lol.

LadyEllen -> RE: Transgendered character on a soap opera (12/1/2006 2:13:22 PM)

Wow MK!

They were classics thats for sure; we get reruns on UK Gold, but they have lost of lot of their appeal over the last 20-30 years, thats for sure.

I have to go and stroke my pussy now; its not been well what with all the banging on Guy Fawkes night.

(its an Are You Being Served reference, people, OK!?)
