JerseyKrissi72 -> Diabetes (11/28/2006 12:17:59 PM)

Shortly before my Master passed away I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes and thankfully I only need to take glucofage one 500mg pill a day and watch my diet. I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but have kept my sugar at 90-120 on a fast of four hours. Anyone have any good recipies for diabetics or good sites that I can visit for more information? thankyou.

There are several diabetics on my South Beach Diet message board and most of them have been able to lower their medications by following the South Beach plan. I do it to help prevent diabetes. We have lots of good recipes on our board.

i am also a diabetic and a physician.  The American Diabetes Association has a very helpful website including much nutritional advice and several good diet references.  i have been on the South Beach diet for a month now and find it very helpful.  It has reduced my meds by more than 50% and i am loosing weight.  I recommend it but watch your sugars carefully during the first two weeks though low blood sugars are unlikely with glucophage.

I have been eating alot of raw veggies and fruits, drinking alot of water and green tea with no sugar..I find SPLENDA works well with my sugar...I try to eat as much low carbs as possible.

SweetBobbie -> RE: Diabetes (11/29/2006 4:05:55 PM)

i am a fan of Splenda as well and the other day i saw a generic product with sucralose (Splenda) which means the patent may have expired and the price will drop soon.  Stevia is a natural sweetener that is not sugar which is also very good but pricey.  Also i do not know your weight but i am overweight and trying to loose to what is called my Ideal Body Weight, you can google that phrase on line and get a site to calculate yours based on hieght, age and lther factors.  If yu stay close to your IBW then the diabetres is much easier to control.

I have given alot of thought to the gastric bypass surgery and even though there are alot of risks ...the benefits outweigh the risks and sometime next year I will have that done..I just need to get alot of things situated in my life first...

There's a crock pot cooking book fix it and forget it for diabeties.

andreaC -> RE: Diabetes (11/29/2006 7:35:03 PM)

I am diabetic, type 2 and i have been able to cut all my medications (avandia and metformine).  I did this by being on a protein diet from a medical clinic and monitored closely by a doctor.  It has done wonders for me, just by cutting all my carbs and i am losing weight more wisely efficiently and healthy.  Also, i do some exercise at least 3 times a week, like 30 mins of bike, sit ups.

Now if i can resist cheese.......yes that is my weakness.  I am sure Master will keep them all away from me........bummer[8D]  Seriously, i couldnt do it without my Master's support, he is the greatest and very involved in my progress.

I wish you the best of luck for your surgery [:)]

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Diabetes (11/30/2006 12:31:34 PM)

i found some light and fit yogurts with no added sugars, they don't raise my sugar any...I am also taking alot of herbs that help with energy and blood sugar.[:)]

andreaC -> RE: Diabetes (11/30/2006 3:17:37 PM)

I love yogurt and the one i take, its called silhouette, i dont do well with aspartame and most diet products have in them.  I tried herbs, but i really dont like it, unless Master would make me drink some with a crop in his hands [:D]

Wished they could make cheese with no fat, no sugar, but doesnt taste like rubber [;)]

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Diabetes (11/30/2006 4:08:32 PM)

for some reason cheese does not raise my blood sugar..the main things that DO raise my sugar are::

pasta
white bread (yuk anyhow)
pizza
french fries
and milk

Hi.  I have been a Diabetic since age six.  It will be thrity years this March.  I would be cautious about fad diets such as he South Beach Diet, regardless of what "doctors" in a chatroom might advise you.  All no-carb diets, or diets that restrict carbohydrates induce a state in the body known as ketoacidosis.  If you do any research at all on this condition, you will find that it can be very dangerous.  I am not telling you not to restrict complex carbohydrates, but just to be sure not to go to any extremes by deleting carbs totally out of your daily meals.  The reasearch is out there.  And, yes, The American Diabetes Asociation and the American Diatetic Associtation are wonderful resources for persons with diabetes. Good luck in your endeavors to lead a healthy life!  I wish you well!  You should do great.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Diabetes (12/1/2006 5:56:06 AM)

I don't restrict myself of carbs...For example, this morning I had one scrambled egg, a banana nut muffin and some home fries for breakfast...most would say that is dangerous for someone with diabetes but my sugar will go up some, come back down and I will have a yogurt for lunch and a light dinner...everyone's body is diff'rent...for example: some diabetics I know can't have Splenda but it works great w/ my body...I cannot have ANY candy but I have a girlfriend who can eat candy ever now and then..I must eat sugar free candy in VERY LIMITED PORTIONS...every diabetic finds their diet diff'rent than the other ..

You are lucky to be able to eat, eggs, banana/muffin......my sugar would react right away.......as for the sugar free food......most have aspartame and that doesnt do good at all with my stomach, so i stay away from them........never used splenda though.

Master doesnt eat sugar, so i am pretty much safe there......[;)] i guess our body reacts differently from others.......

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Diabetes (12/6/2006 3:54:41 AM)

my sugar will react if I ate all of the muffin for example..but when I go to eat the muffin i only allow myself half...with four kids, they are usually more than willing to finish the rest of my food lol...nice to have kids around, better than pets ! [8D]

SilentHunter -> RE: Diabetes (12/6/2006 4:08:54 AM)

I am a diabetic type 1, and funnily enough an ex diabetic nurse, and we are the worst people for not doing what the nurses tell you. I am lucky, if i eat sweet things i can change the dose of insulin. as it is i am on a standard dose of 28 units once a day, and then a 16, 16 and 18 with meals. My mum is a type 2 diabetic, and her life hasn't stopped. As long as  you use your common sense, you don't have to change your entire life, just small parts.

I wouldn't suggest surgery, as with being diabetic, you still have to eat (even when your being sick) your body still needs to have something to work on. Keep a small amount of chocolate, or candy in the fridge as a treat, remember that a small amount will make you want to behave more lol.

SH/Steve

SilentHunter, your words are so very true..thankyou..and I pray for your continued health and happiness..

SilentHunter -> RE: Diabetes (12/6/2006 6:51:30 AM)

They are spoken from experience, just try to eat sensibly without going off the deepend, i know i did when i was t old, went mental for salad and stuff, the body can't adjust that quickly. Eat what you did before, but just in moderation. I hope you get adjusted, because its a large step, but when your mind accepts it, your body quickly moves into line. If you have anything to ask, just ask me here, or on the other side, i have tons of diabetes info, for both the US and the UK, lots of my online friends have it too.

Hugss.
Steve.

South Beach is not a low carb plan.  We eat plenty of carbs in the form of whole grains, sweet potatoes, fruits, and veggies. We do not go into ketosis on South Beach.  What we cut out are products with added sugars, white processed carbs, trans fats and we limit saturated fats.
