Well, things have sure changed since I went to college. I completely support Columbia, their policy of free speech and the rights of these students to form whatever kinds of social clubs they desire. I'm also heartened to see many advocating safety.

Hopefully, they will be responsible and not allow it to interfer in other academic studies.

Iowa State has a wonderful group called "Cuffs". They were established on campus, officially, 6 years ago.

Kudos to universities who truly embrace diversity on their campuses.

Hhmmm.... I was one of the people who helped create Conversio Virium in the fall of 1994. Not sure how I feel about them doing demos in a city where are so many resources but so few welcome the under 21 bdsmer. You can go down to TES or to GMSMA and learn techniques but you can't be a voting member if you are under 21 -- CV gives younger people a voice.

We fought long and hard to keep the group around when there were claims we were "doing more than talking" and it got nasty in 1995.

I hope the current officers don't muck it up. That would piss me off.

I also hope its just a sign that students are getting more support and education on their sexuality.

I am very proud that the group continues to elect officers and offer students a safe place to go and figure out if BDSM or SM or whatever is right for them.

I graduated from NYU last year and attended a few CV meetings when I lived in the city. It was a great group and I laugh at the article that describes the demo where "A man who only called himself Dov whipped a girl for 14 minutes." or something like that. I know Dov, as do most people who are active in the NYC scene. It's impossible not to know him. The way it's phrased makes him sound like some shady character that lurks in dark alleyways just waiting to whip someone.

Back in my early days of NYU we had a group called WHAP but I was too timid to venture out into public...I lurked on their listserv for 2 years and by the time I decided to go into r/t the group had dissolved due to graduating members. I wish now that I had been the person I am now 2 years ago and could have taken over the club and kept it alive.

The thing that disturbs me the most is NOT that school money is going towards groups like this for Columbia students but that school money is being used for people outside the school like this reporter to come in and expose the personal lives of students. That's the only real misallocation of funds I see.

I should say that I am so pleased that CV continues to grow and function -- most college groups are like WHAP and they just disappear when members graduate.

I'm curious as to why this reporter was on campus at all looking at CV... it's been around now more than a decade. I'm sure they use their funding for good things and I know they also do some events for charity fund raising. Sounds a bit like some fundie (like the ones we had to deal with back at the beginning) is trying to stir up trouble.
