I have a submissive and friend who is in need of some therapy. He has anger management issues and I'm pretty sure he's ADHD. He's been to therapists in the past, but of course they were vanilla ones, and were treating his kinky urges as part of his problems, when in fact it's the only thing helping him deal with his stress lately. Do anyone of you know of a listing of BDSM-positive mental health professionals, or specifically of anyone in Edmonton, Alberta?

Any help is much appreciated.

my advice would be to look for therapists who aren't your run of the mill psychologists - therapists who are alternative medicine friendly, alternative method friendly, etc. finding someone who's at least openminded enough to give the whole idea of bdsm a chance, even if they don't know much about it, is a start - and i've found that therapists who are willing to deviate from the norm in terms of method often fit more easily into that category. my therapist and psychiatrist are both not into bdsm, at least, not that i know, but they're both openminded enough to consider that maybe my involvement in it isn't just because i'm screwed up in the head, and they're willing to listen.

good luck!

This is the link for kink-aware professionals.  It looks like there is a therapist in Edmonton.  Hope this is useful

This is more of a generalized answer for folks who might stumble upon this and find themselves in a similar situation.  In addition to looking at the KAP list, you may wish to reach out to BDSM or leather group leadership and without divulging the nature of the problem, simply ask them if they know of someone in their area who is a kink-friendly mental health professional (or physician, if it's a health problem, or lawyer if it's a legal problem.)  The KAP site was recently taken over by NCSF and does not contain all of the possible resources many communities have.  Often, good leaders will have at their fingertips resources to direct their membership towards should it be necessary.  I've employed this tactic a few times for different circumstances and have never been let down.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the thoughtful suggestions. I just want my friend to have the help he deserves, without having to hide part of who he is.

MisP - How do you find these people you've said to ask if you're not part of any groups?  I'd love to find a doctor who is kink friendly, but have no idea where to start

LadyS - Hope that Q didn't interfere with your question, wish your friend luck inf inding the right professional to help with their problems rather than prove to be yet another stress added to their lives

Surely you know how to use google and search for a munch or BDSM group in the area where you're searching.

For instance, I just googled the words: bdsm munch group pa
I got the Dom Sub Friends resource list:
http://www.domsubfriends.com/a-wwwdir/org.shtml
Wartenburg Wheel Club List:
http://www.wartenbergwheel.com/clubs.html
Society of Janus groups list:
http://www.soj.org/groups.html
Darkheart's List:

Iron Rose's List:
http://www.iron-rose.com/IR/support_groups.htm
The Crucible groups list:

The Leather Journal club directory:
http://www.theleatherjournal.com/directory.htm
caryls page:
http://www.drkdesyre.com/meetppl/orgs/orgs.html

As you can see, it's not all that difficult.  I'd search for the most common few groups among these pages and drop their contact person an email.  It's a start....

Of course not - as in any thread, I think the more information we can gain, the better. :)

MisP - Thanks a bunch, this is one of the areas in life where I'm willing to admit I'm a complete dumbass  *blushes*  I was actually confused about what the "leader" idea meant, but I was overcomplicating.  The one in charge of any group related to the lifestyle; I can't quite explain what I was thinking, some secret organization or something I guess lol

That totally helps, thanks

Oh, you mean you didn't know there was a secret, unified group of hardcore BDSMers who rule the world from the shadowy dungeons of power? Where have YOU been? Sheesh.

Agreed. There can be many outlets among local groups, or those that perhaps cater your particular orientation (e.g. submissive, domanint, het/homo-sexual, etc.) These are the kind of resources, too, that we've been scavenging and collecting for our group's 'database' of links. Good luck with helping connect Your friend with resources.

Best regards,
David Dream Wizard and his dreamgirl, joy

PS... can we get an invite into that secret society? ...no? *chuckles*

Here's another link:
http://www.polychromatic.com/pfp/

Described as: A list of professionals who have been referred here, or who have identified themselves as being, open-minded about polyamory and polyamorous issues.

Though not necessarily BDSM specific, a number of the professionals have descriptions that would include the ability to be sensitive to the Lifestyle as well.

Good luck (now can i have a key to the secret society?! ;)
-joy, David Dream Wizard's dreamgirl!

Thanks everyone. I had my boy contact Edward from the KAP list, as he came recommended by some people in Edmonton who know him as well, but Edward is moving to BC. He did, however, refer my boy to another professional, Michele-something. I think he'll be okay.

Thanks again for all the help!
