how would someone go about getting tested for genetic problems they could pass onto off spring if they're adopted and have zero health history of their families and no way to get it? Do you need biological family history to have your own genetics tested?

I'm no expert FP - but I thought that they didnt need familial history to do genetic testing for this pupose, because what they look for is markers in the single genetic sample for possible problems. They only need your sample for this, and though family history may give a pointer for stuff to look for, its not required.

Since you mention offspring, then its important to get your partner's genetics looked at too; there are some genetic conditions which only emerge if two people sharing a certain code get together. The two parents have no problem, but combined their genetics produce the problem.

Additionally, you might want to consider the insurance implications of getting a genetic test done, as your insurance might become invalid if you dont reveal to the insurer all relevant information known to you; if you take a test and discover a propensity for say, heart disease, then this becomes relevant information which your insurer would like to know when assessing risk and determining premia. However, in some places I believe there are statutory protections in place as regards revelation to insurers, so you might want to check out your legal position before informing insurers too!

Yes, my partner would be tested for geneitc genes too. I know that certain conditions come about when both parents have the gene that combined is the birth defect.

It would be a good thing if they only needed my genetics and his.

Insurance is a good point too.

Nope. They need yours and his...
In certain cases, the more detailed a family history, the more a doc will look for certain things and miss others. It's no big deal, just tell your doc as much as you know about your own history, which can give them valuable markers about where to work. Obesity, low bp, chest pains, fainting.. all those are good things to mention. The fact that you're adopted. also good.

A little off topic here but is it possible also to get non identifying information from the adoption agency?  Most adoptions agencies will have this and will give it to you upon proof of identity even in a closed adoption.  When I received my own non identifying information it included family medical histories, education levels, physical descriptions, career paths and hobbies.  I am not sure about genetic testing and how inclusive t is but having some knowledge may be able to help you narrow particular tests to those that may be more prevalent in your history.  I have a lot of information about this type of thing and if you want to email me on the other side, I may be able to help you get some of what you may be looking for.

MsKat there's no info about my parents other than name and age, which I already know but have forgotten, and that he was in jail , and the circumstances around the removal. It wasn't her choice to put the kids up, My birth mother lost her right to us  CPs took us away from her and she didn't bother to show up to court to fight so her rights were terminated..

When kids are yanked from the biological parents there's little to no information to be had.

Go to your primary care physician and they can refer you to the appropriate people. Some can do some of the tests themselves.

SweetBobbie -> RE: Geneteic testing when one is adopted, with no family history. (12/16/2006 5:12:10 PM)

FelinePersuasion, unfortunately there is no simple "genetic testing panel" rather there is a series of specific genetic tests for specific markers for some but not all known genetic diseases.  All of these tests are relatively expensive and a broad panel would probably be prohibitively expensive.  Most genetic testing is targeted either because of the birth of a child with a genetic disease or a family history such as Tay-Sachs disease in someone of Ashkenazi European) Jewish heritage.  It is a sad condition but we have no simple screening test for genetic predispositions to diseases such as heart disease either.  With a great deal of effort we can read the sequence of base pairs in a person's DNA but we still are a long long way from reading a persons genertic code.

Do a little reading.  Go to your local prenatal clinic or community nurse.  Easy to find.  Just phone information and ask.  If you are really seriously concened about heart disease and really are seriously thinking of having a baby.....from your pic I would suggest asking your doctor for a diet and exercise plan before getting pregnant.  Pregnancy and delivery are hard on the body and heart.  The better shape you are in, the better you will be able to carry, deliver and care for a new born.  There are some great community prenatal exercise programs out there that are run right out of community centres.  Not only would you get in shape but you would meet other women who are are also wanting to get pregnant and get in shape and you can be a support for one another. The more support you have the better for you and your potential family member.

My adopted moms sister had heart defects because her momma did. Barbra had 6 surgeries to fix a heart birthdefect. So we do know somethings are passed on.

Bobbie if you have a good health insurance most things are covered by it.

unowned, while a baby right at this moment isn't planned, it was a thought that poped into my head about genetics.  There's a lot of things a person wh*o's adopted in a manner such as mine is left to wonder about.

Absolutely but having dealt with health insurance companies from both sides of the exam table for years not all health insurance is "good" and even among the good companies when you start discussing testing that could realistically run into the thousands of dollars they start asking much more specific questions about what the benefit of the information and the real likelyhood of such a problem being discovered.  i would certainly discusss the matter with my insurance comapny and determine their policies before committing to the testing.  Also most physicians doing the testing will be familiar with policy requirements such as preauthorization but do not rely on them.

I am adopted.   I was sold on the grey market.  There are no records of Me.. and in fact, when I tried to get a copy of my birth certificate, was told I dont exist.    I had lost four children with miscarriage and no one knew why.   I had not told My doctor I was adopted.   I finally did tell him, and then they did a BUNCH of tests, and found out that I have a thyroid problem that only happens when I am pregnant.   Tell the doctor you are adopted and you have no history.   They will decide what tests you need done.    I regret not telling him the first day I saw him.

amativedame -> RE: Geneteic testing when one is adopted, with no family history. (1/7/2007 10:26:55 PM)

thyriod problems during pregnancy is not at all uncommon... and realisticly is a test that should have been preformed even if you weren't adopted.

Genetics have no real role in that.
