I'm currently reading a book called  Influence: The Psychology of Pursuasion. Its authored by Dr. Robert Cialdini.  It was recommended to me by Padriag when I was searching for answers about mental bondage.

It offers knowledge that could definately have applications in the world of bdsm. But I think its a great book for anyone to read.

Hi marie ... and all gentle readers...

While there are all kinds of darker, more evil
ways to manipulate minds....

Cialdini's book is absolutely,
without a doubt, indisputably and beyond-question
the single finest resource on manipulation and persuasion
that is generally available.  It's in every Borders and B&N.
And, wonder of wonders,
everything he writes is backed up by actual research....

Anyone who has even the slightest interest
in persuasion.... or NOT being persuaded and influenced
will find it the best 10 hours of reading imaginable.

It is always the first book I reccomend
to copywriters and ad-writers and marketing people.

My old masters' thesis on Chinese propaganda techniques
is a strong second....
but I'm narcisisstic and tend to approve of myself.

DD, an occasionally persuasive old goat with a flair for hyperbole

PS.... predrag is right,
these are unquestionably the first 7 buttons to push...
but.... there ARE more, deeper, darker, more dubious buttons.

Well, I dont have anything cynister in mind !  A quest for knowledge is sometimes harmless.

Frankly, I have found books on the subject to be quite uninspiring, and for the most part, either redundant or somewhat shaky in the ideas they promote. For all the dissertations and volumes of advice written on dominance and submission, nothing compares to eating a bright red apple under a clear blue sky and just plain thinking on it for yourself.

Bingo!
But the bad news is,
really "thinking on things for yourself"
is one of the rarest, most challenging things in the world.

DD,
PS... reading's not only easier,
it's probably funner too....
Get the roses/thorns book,
at least it's got a few jokes here and there.

I would have to add that Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power also aligns with Cialdini's book in very amusing and rudimentary ways.

say does anybody know this nottertail guy?

Dear M, and all gentle readers...

Apologies if I was unclear.
I was not suggesting that you were "cynister",
or that the sadists here were anything other than wonders of love.

But consider this,
I think the marketing of baby-formula is "cynister".
Also all the pharmaceutical ads that fill American prime time.
and dairy-marketing, plastic-surgery ads, political campaigns,

... and all the consumer-culture crap that makes people
think if they fill their houses with plastic crap they will be happy.

That... my dear.... is sinister to me!

And Cialdini showed 'em how to do it better.

DD......... a goat who's rant is over now

Nah, you werent unclear.  My tone was jestful. or is it gestful?  I always forget to type in an "lol" or something.

Anyway are you sure its sinister?  I think that damn word should root from cynicism or cynic or something to that affect.

Indeed, but then I've always felt the aquisition of a worthwhile thing is often measured out in some degree of challenge.

Nope the same question was asked in that thread about the series and the same answer applies. I can say however that now I know I am of the mind that any books read and even if you don't like it, is an experince, cause I would always wonder if Iw as missing something by not reading a title, and now I know I'm not lol.

I thought the beauty series was horribly written, so poorly in fact I almost didn't read them, fortuantly it gets a little better written, Also most her stuff she wrote about was not only dangerous it was far fetched whanko fantasy material.

Are you on a mission to get Ann Rice or something today? Posting this same message on a recent post wasn't good enough? Geeeze....

Training with Miss Abernathy had some interesting ideas. Written by what I would call an intelligent person (just to be PC ;-).

My slave seems to benefit (me that is ;-) from slavecraft (Baldwin I think). Personally I can't stand the book. But if it makes her better for me then I'm all for it.

Screw the Roses and S/M 101 are great for people getting into the lifestyle but they are a launchpad not a landing place (which you decide on after you have tried some *hopefully* fun stuff)
