as nick said ^.

so long as you are having no problems with stainless steel and are getting it from a high quality, reliable company then really there is no big problem with continuing to wear it. the great majority of my own jewelry is stainless steel...

the only concerns for the average person is the possibility of nickel allergies occuring suddenly, inferior quality stainless steel being sold to oneself, or wishing for safe color options.

titanium is much stronger, allergic reaction almost completely underheard of, and is safely colored (when one is looking for such). in many locations titanium is becoming the only legally acceptable jewelry for fresh piercings, but in the US high grade stainless steel is still acceptable in most if not all places (have been outside the US for the past 3 years, i assume this hasn't changed much as i've not heard otherwise). it's only downside comes down to cost, really. in smaller jewelry it rarely makes a huge cost difference, but once getting up in larger gauges or fancier jewelry the price can jump.

like said, average person wearing pretty standard jewelry in most types of piercings, quality stainless steel is fine in a healed piercing. in the OP's case, though, she's seeking something that can hold up better in use where the minor breaks could be being caused in the skin. best option in both ways there is titanium.
