JerseyKrissi72 -> Is This True? (12/19/2006 2:38:26 PM)

Someone told me recently that if you play with someone on a regular basis and they play with others, nothing exclusive that it is dangerous if they use whips, paddles, etc on you because risk of infection? Can infections spread through toy play if the skin is broken? I realize sex toys are one thing, I am not speaking of vaginal or anal play...strictly spankings, etc....just curious.

BDSM05478 -> RE: Is This True? (12/19/2006 2:44:42 PM)

in theory yes it is true. Do I know someone that has gotten Hep from a dirty single tail, no. If skin is broken, or even scraped/ abrased the possiblity of transmission of blood born pathogens or even run of the mill germs can infect you. There is an old "joke" about getting sicker from a hospital than what you were originally admitted for, which has some truth in it.

SilentHunter -> RE: Is This True? (12/19/2006 2:46:46 PM)

Some floggers, whips etc can't be washed, so imagine of you had blood on the flogger (easily done if the edge catches the skin), you can use anti bacterial wipes etc, but is that going to kill things like herpe's, HIV, MRSA in some cases (we have no idea what someone else is carrying around, MRSA, isa big killer over here UK).

I myself (being the Nurse that i was) would only bring my own toys to be used on myself, or the one person that owns them if that makes sense, hope that helps.

Merry Christmas.

Master always insisted (when we played with others) that only my ropes be used on me.  He is a safety specialist and did not wish any chances be taken with my welfare.  Prior to being collared another Dom told me He would only play with me with the toys i owned because of the same issue.  Now even tho i am owned only my toys will ever touch my body.  I have had some of the floggers hit in a manner that gave very small nicks in the skin that were not even noticed until they were healing.  My thought is error on the side of health.  Don't take chances.

Always a good question JerseyKrissi. It is admirable that you are concerned about the subject.

Antibacterial wipes are intended for use on non-porous surfaces. Leather (topgrain and suede), unsealed wood (paddles, clothespins etc), fur, etc are porous so use of anti-bacterial wipes is not effective in killing many bacterial nasties.

With that being said, HIV and Hep C will not survive outside a living host for a lengthy amount of time. Dr. Charles Moser, a nation’s leading authorities on sexuality-related medicine recommends hanging up floggers in a ventilated place for a week after use. HIV and Hep C viruses, cannot live outside the body in the air.

Any toy that is used on more than one person carries the risk of transmitting things from one to another.  Even something as mundane as fungal skin irritants can transfer (as they can on the handle of borrowed paddles, as I learned that hard way)  Cleaning certain surfaces is near impossible, so better to be careful than be sorry later.

mnottertail -> RE: Is This True? (12/19/2006 8:41:25 PM)

I am with DV all the way, risk can be minimized somewhat by ultraviolet radiation, hilex and eucalyuptus wash(good on leather) that can be gotten at Sam's Club, however; in the end, autoclaving and shit like that is a sure bet, or as near as sure as we can make it.

But remember, everybodies gotta die of something, if I gotta go by getting a dicksucking; I feel that is something I wouldn't mind anyone telling my great-great-great-great grandchildren, me not being a Naval hero going to go down in the effluvian wars of the 980's  or something...........

Little common sense, a little caution, a little polish, a little poise; know whadda mean, Vern?

It is possible to spread disease infections threw blood,if you whip someone and draw blood then use it on someone else can pass along germs.
I recommend cleaning ALL items used.
If you cant wash an item at least get a spray that kills bacteria on non washable surfaces.
I wear non latex gloves quite a bit when doing sessions,which I change depending on what activity W/we do next.

Not only can you spread STD's but the common cold and Flu also if you dont keep things sanitized.

Whats that saying..."Cleaniness is next to Godliness"...lol

i myself never knew that diseases could be spread this way , never had anything but my own toys used on me , but thanks to everyone for giving the heads up .

FangsNfeet -> RE: Is This True? (12/31/2006 6:47:19 AM)

Bacteria can spread from object to object. However, given the idea that everyone has a moderate to outstanding immune system, I don't see anyone geting sick. Did you know that you spread more germs in a handshake than you do when you french kiss?

When I worked in a hospital we always had to change gloves and clean the blood pressure cuff in between patients. With the paranoia of bacteria and MRSA installed by the medical field, it's just habit for me to give toys a quick run down with a sanatizer wipe between sessions and persons.

KatyLied -> RE: Is This True? (12/31/2006 8:26:54 AM)

I would be more comfortable if bottoms would keep their own toys and restrict them for their use only.  That is the only thing that makes sense to me.  I guess for insertables you can cover them with condoms, I don't know how you can sanitize leather.  I know that personally I would not want something used on me that had been used on another person.  Ewww.

People can and do get Hep C from blood transferred on a razor blade or toothbrush. If there is blood on anything, it is just common sense to clean it off.

When it comes to leather, a quick wipe down to rid dust and lent would be nice. As for any wounds that a whip may cause, the bodies natural immune system and an antiseptic wipe should keep infection from happening. How many doms have you seen keep there whips from touching the floor?

whisperedsighs -> RE: Is This True? (12/31/2006 11:44:31 AM)

Yes, if skin is broken, and the toys are not cleaned properly there is a chance of being infected.  Hepetitus comes to mind off hand.
