dsamethyst -> a bit off topic but an interesting question (2/21/2005 10:23:00 AM)

I am attempting to make a model of my upper torso for use in making clothes...I have a dress dummy...but it just doesnt have the right dimensions....can anyone figure out how to make a torso model....preferably out of laytex as the final model...I tried using a plaster cast type of mold but i couldnt find the laytex stuff that hardens to a skin like feel...

I need to do this to be able to sew some intimate apparrel ...YES I sew. and since i have a problem that some of you are aware of I figured that this may be the way to go until i raise the 8K or so necessary to fix the issue

Have you tried Liquid Latex? http://www.liquidlatex.net/ No clue how it would actually work.. in theory, it would give you flexible mold that you could then fill with Crayola Model Magic modeling compound to make a dressmaker's dummy. Good luck!

i don't know if you can get it in quantity, but there are kits available for making your own dildo. casting materieals are included, and i think they use some form of cyberskin or latex. check out you local, up-scale, adult shop. they should have them there.

Most modern dressforms are metallic mesh - almost like chain-link fence fabric. They can be molded to a torso, taken off, reassembled, and placed on a stand - no need for expensive molding processes, as long as you're reasonably careful about pressure on the finished form.

There are quite a few different ways of doing it and MidnightWriter has a decent suggestion but the problem with that is if you knock it, you've lost your shape.

If I wanted something very accurate, I'd get plaster bandages (you can usually find 'em in your local medical supply store and online) and have someone rub you down with vaseline, apply the bandages and stay still while they dry. You want to use a good amount of bandages to create a durable shell. If you do it laying down, all your body parts will be laying down too. If you do it standing up, make sure to keep your normal posture...don't suck anything in! After they do the front, do the back too so you have 2 halves. You can cut and fit them together (If you sew you know about making registration marks) You can then use this shell to make a laytex foam figure which you can then mount on a stand if you wish. A couple of pointers on the laytex foam, it WILL expand so make sure to give the foam a way to grow out of the shell mold or it will break the shell. Its kind of expensive just as an FYI. The link below offers laytex, foam, casting materials and if you have questions call them. The customer service people are used to strange questions.

The way a lot of dress shops custom fit clothes is to take TONS of measurment and add batting to an existing dress form to mimick your body style/shape/size. Its worked well for literally hundreds of years. Of course doing a mock up out of something like muslin is the best bet because its cheap and you can get a perfect fit and then pattern tons of pieces from it.

Hope that helps!

Entering the phrase "make your own dress form" into your search engine of choice turns up scads of links that might help you create the perfect (for you) dress form.

When searching for something, I always hit Ebay first. I did a search, and they had several adjustable forms. So that you can adjust all important areas.

They are a little expensive, but my seamstress said that they are very good to use.

Good Luck,

thank you all for all the suggestions....I found out that i can find that make your own didlo stuff is for sale...not in bulk...it woudl cost abotu 500 to make a torso....not somethign im willing to do rightnow....

Im actually tryign to make a few bras that fit....lingerie is my thing and welll....after having both removed and dealing with what is left...and not being able to find soemthign that fits without a "breast friend" is very upsetting...and everythign that i have found int he mastectomy tryps well just arent for me....not a nice one in the bunch never mind anything that I would have worn now or ever....so Im going to try the mold and actually have founda fella that is going to a fancy dancy art school in manhattan...and well...although his dad was a former patient of mine...the kid said he is willing to give it a shot.

the batting and wire thing wont work for this particular application...i had used it int he past for my former life as a bridesmaid dress maker... if I need a dress i can do that if I need alterations i can do that....but on intimate apparrell...nope i cant get he fit tight enough to be useful. Thank you all for the help and ideas...it was those ideas that prompted me to call the former patient...as a graduation gag for his art teacher he had done a full body costume of himself and i remmebr when you all were giving me the different ideas
