Mercnbeth -> GREAT TACTIC TO FIGHT CENSORSHIP! (2/21/2005 2:12:36 PM)

This is an example of my favorite weapon against hypocrisy, use the law against it. Of course it could backfire and art classes and other 'classic' and 'artistic' acceptable nude displays of the human body may be outlawed, but at the very least it brings the problem to the forefront.

Speaking of the forefront. The most obvious example of sexual discrimination and hypocrisy can be witnessed at the beach. Why is it permissible for a man's chest to be exposed and a woman's isn't?

Anyway, I wonder if you get a discount if you bring your own pencil?

Strip club artfully slips by anti-nudity law
Reuters 18feb05

A US strip club has found an artful way to prance past a city law that prohibits full nudity.

On what it calls Art Club Nights, the Erotic City strip club in Boise, Idaho charges customers $19 for a sketch pad, pencil, and a chance to see completely naked women dancers.

In 2001 the Boise City Council passed an ordinance banning total nudity in public unless it had "serious artistic merit" - an exemption meant to apply to plays, dance performances and art classes.

Perhaps if enough people were to write to their senators, etc. in order to pass some sort of equal treatment law we'd have more topless women - or less topless men.

Actually a few years ago there was an anti discrimination case won in NY state addressing the issue of men being allowed to bare their chest on public beaches as oposed to women. It has been legal since then for woman to display full frontal nudity. I would have to do some research to pull the exact case up but, I can vouche that I have tested this ruling publicly and have yet to be arested or slapped with any public display of indecency charges. I was however living in NYC at the time where the case made much larger waves and have yet to test this up state. I'll let you know how that goes when I do.

Thank you very much for that. I wondered why no one had tried that before... I guess someone has.

Kudos to you Somnovi! We congratulate you on your courage and convictions! If you know of any attempt to do the same out here on the left coast we'll be there. Except beth burns under a 100 watt light bulb, so her top will be slathered with 75 UV rated lotion.

PS - beth loves your colonial style outfit in your profile pictures.

It already has. It recently made news in my city (Long Beach, California) that an art school was required to apply for an adult entertainment license because they were using live nude models in their classes. This was a legit art school in a section of town designated an arts district too, not an adult entertainment purveyor trying to game the system.

I think that things like this do tend to backfire, because people see them as bald-faced attempts to usurp the will of the general public. That isn't to say that the will of a local population couldn't use a little usurping once in a while (as in the civil rights movement), I just think that most folks wouldn't put the inalienable right to oogle naked women, or more specifically the right to profit from others oogling naked women, in the same class.
