GreyStorm -> Statistics (2/22/2005 3:53:30 AM)

92% of all males and 62% of females reported masturbating (Kinsey, 1953).

Nearly 85% of men and 45% of women who were living with a sexual partner reported masturbating in the past year (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

27% of men and 19% of women had oral sex in the past year (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

23% of men and 11% of women bought X-rated movies in the last year (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

10% of men and 9% of women had anal sex in the past year (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994)

14% of men and 11% of women have had some sexual experience with sadomasochism (Janus & Janus, 1993).

Any comments? I think the oral percentages are a bit low. How about the anal?

Honestly, I do not put too much stock in statistical data. IMO (wrong as some may see it) there is always a bias of some form in statistics, there is always a target demographic.

Agreed. I think they can be useful for general info, but it's something like using horoscopes to determine who you will marry.

I think LOTS of people do LOTS of really kinky fun stuff. And I think LOTS more people wish they felt comfortable enough to do more of it.

I've always heard that there are only two types of people in the world, masturbaters and liars [:D]

Seriously though, there is generally a desire for the subject to "look good" in the eyes of the researcher. If it is something that may be frowned uppon a subject may deny it for fear that the researcher may not like them. This even happens when the subjects are told that their data is not connected with their name or any personal data. It is generally human nature to want to be liked by an authority figure that you respect and most people respect researchers.

I agree[:)] I'd be willing to bet that if that same poll was conducted here on the collorme site; the results would be quite different. Any time you see one of these somewhere, the second thing you should look for is who sponsered the poll? Polls were designed to help swing the public into believeing everyone else believes as the pollster has indicated. They are not unbiased, and therefore should be looked at as entertainment! And, I'm not a liar either because I masterbate! [:D]

GreyStorm -> RE: Statistics (2/22/2005 2:25:55 PM)

Well did you know that 68 percent of all statistics are made up?

and surprisingly, that is the same percentage of men who fake their orgasms.

Go figure.

ScooterTrash -> RE: Statistics (2/22/2005 2:55:32 PM)

I would have to agree that if they polled the average "Joe (or Jill) on the street that chances of getting honest answers to these particular questions would be slim. BUT, I like the idea of conducting the poll on collarme, I highly doubt any of us would likely try to hide anything...it may actually be skewed the other direction by those wanting to get "perv points"...lol

I love that statement. I agree with it too. I've had friends that lied about their activities in the past only to fess up years later that they did all kinds of sexual things they had denied doing in the past.

PS, I would also add two other types, Frigid or scared of their own shadow (damnation)

Of course you'd get a different result - this 'population' is skewed to the point of being pointless for the purposes of that research - as anyone with two brain cells to rub together would realise. It would be like surveying the playing staff of the entire NFL and then claiming that 98% of people enjoy playing football.

The research cited attempts, I assume, to survey samples of the general public to get meaningful results, but as a couple above have pointed out, even that can be skewed, no matter how carefully the research is designed. This is because most of it is done through voluntary replies, so one is only getting answers from people willing to talk about their sexuality, so if anything, the results are skewed in favour of finding bigger rather than lesser proportions of sexually adventurous respondents.

FindingYou -> RE: Statistics (2/24/2005 11:33:48 AM)

I dont trust statistics about sex. Most poeple wont talk about it to strangers, that would leave a sample so small that it may no longer be represenitive of the population at large.

How would you do a blind/fair test of sex habits? phone poeple at random? Eventually someone will report randy calls to the police. --Imagine a single woman, getting a call (at dinner time naturally) -- "excuse me ma'am, how often do you masterbate?" -- ya that'll work.

You seem to be doing that a lot lately, maybe you should switch to water when you're reading the posts here.[;)]
