someone once gave really good advice about something and said you shouldn't be vague.

Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun with singular nouns in their writing.

To ever split an infinitive is wrong.

To ever split an infinitive is wrong. You should always give credit to the original author.

*smiles*

That was a good one, glg28!

The OP does invite original or borrowed material--but omits the point of proper credit. I readily admit that mine are a combination of original and borrowed--the trouble here is properly attributing credit, as many sources borrow (steal?) freely from each other. Then there's the issue of my memory--things I heard or saw long ago, but now can't remember when or where I first saw or heard them.

Kudos to those who did acknowledge their sources! And with that, here's a borrowed one:

If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.

Tim

P.S. Or as Yoda might say, "Correct on this, you are!"

Here's one that drives ME nuts:

Placing a comma between subject and predicate, is not correct.

Here's a good one from Wolcott Gibbs (in reference to the style of Time magazine at the time):

“Backward ran sentences until reeled the mind.”

Every author should try manfully to avoid sexism in his prose.

One-word sentences? Eliminate. Always!

[But they do solve that Yoda problem....]

Here's one I use in class:

Don’t get inebriated with the exuberance of your own verbosity to the extent of insipid consternation, promulgating unfettered obfuscation, lest a panoply of proxility proliferate.

[By the way, as Steven Wright asked: "What's another word for 'thesaurus'?"]
