Firstly, Im a firm believer of preparing the area first; rubbing, massaging and moisturizing if need be. Not only does this provide the opportunity to choose my target areas wisely (based on previous marks, bruises, etc) to avoid certain areas/activities temporarily, but also to make sure that the surface has sufficient bloodflow and nerves are "tweaked and ready". Moisurtizer, especially oil, increases the propensity for added pain without added intensity, effort and ripping the skin. Secondly, I advise having a squirt bottle with cold water handy to cool the skin surface as needed and moisturizer handy to reapply. If during play, if I choose to NOT leave marks, I continue to massage the area intermittently to avoid bruising/welting. If I choose to mark, I avoid those areas until the marks have disappeared. However, if I see a specific, entire point of contact begin to "rise up," I deep rub that area to prevent the knotting of tissue and blood clotting. Thirdly, as far as the outer thigh is concerned, I often opt for other areas such as the inner thigh because there is usually more fat in the area to absorb my blows. In my opinion, a lean thigh offers risks of muscle damage but a meaty thigh never discourages me. Also, I give my sub time to warm up by gradually increasing the intensity and/or starting out with sensual play, then working up to higher impact play. If I see that a certain area is being worked too hard or too long, I either change my focus or my toy to accomodate. Then, I gradually resume both when I see the surface returning to a safer point of impact. This is also very exciting and anticipatory for both of us, especially when I use the element of surprise in working her body in such an alternating fashion, using a variation of toys over and over again, and changing up on intensity as well as target areas. Almost like a mind-fuck. Always have fun, enjoy and be safe. LBO
