OK, for fiction it is different. For poetry what do you prefer to read (not write) a standard form or "free" verse?

Not inclusive of all types of poetry and there definitely is no wrong answer, just curious what is your favorite type to read? Oh, It has been about 15 years; I may get some stuff wrong.

I'll make my preference clear. As a writer I want structure. As a reader I could care less, but I notice when it scans wrong. (Yes, I know it doesn't matter, but a former English major notices those things. Yes, I've broken iambs too.)

Midear Iwill-

I like poetry that reads aloud well- something with meter, that scans and rhymes- if it's got some clever internal repeating rhyme, or something of the sort, I really like it.

Poetry evolved as a memenomic <sp?> device, and most of all, I want it to 'stick' just a little.

of course, this reflects my taste, and YMMV.

stay warm,
Lawrence

I like to read ALL FORMS of Poetry and I am a virtual sponge when it comes to anything written with verse in mind be it free or formed or
structured or totally out in right field. Of course I adore music as well
and listen to it virtually 24/7 so Im always in touch with sum form of
poetic ART. Of course My Own writing tends to be free style because
I totally am a non conformist and do tend to take the road less traveled.
Welcome back from your lil self imposed box iwll. Did

I also enjoy all forms of poetry. To me the content is much more important than the form. I like poetry than moves me, that makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

I like most forms of poetry, but I have a particular affection for Haiku that is well written.

You have 17 syllables to create a certain emotion in the reader, and some poets in that form pull that off...

Poetry poetry, a question of style,
the rules of which exist in a twil-
light few can accurately see in the midst.
Color softly your point, or wish that you didst.

For poetry's sharpened shards of meaning
are the mind's heart's for the gleaning.
no two mind's eyes can see the same
and surely no poet, therefore is sane.

I read all forms of poetry as well. Listen to various forms of music with a few exceptions, and view most movement and colors the same way. An artist gives us a view from a different perspective. They touch our emotion, our spirit, with a little bit of theirs in that moment of time. Even if we sit there with hand to face wondering, "What in the world was that all about?" They have touched us somehow. So poetry...even bad poetry, bad music, bad paintings, and ugly colors...makes a connection.

At least with artists it does, and I believe there's a little artist in everyone.

I love to write and I love to read. I am one of those who sees pictures when I read. I also need to see the pictures when I write. It is the message and the feeling. But I agree with topcat that a certain rhythm and rhyme can make it a bit more memorable. Ah, that's the live theater babe in Me coming out. .

I like to read all types of poetry. When I write it, however, I tend to be more of a free verse person. I write it as it comes out and may or may not go back and tidy it up according to how I think it will sound aloud. Sometimes it just comes out perfectly and you know better than to disturb it, if that makes any sense....*g*

Be well,
Irshwlf

Like yourself, I don't care so much about whether it adheres to a particular form or structure, but if it does not scan I find the break in rhythm annoying.

Nowadays, for the most part, I prefer to avoid reading poetry simply because it reminds me a bit much of all the really bad poetry I was forced to read that had been written by angst-ridden teenage girls who wanted me to "get" them, but no matter how much I "got", I still didn't get them into bed with me.

Well, okay, I still mumble over some of the old classics, but those are classics after all. One of these day's I'm gonna have beowulf memorized...

Only free verse tells a story? Not a ballad, epic, sonnet, ode, or limeric in the world has any story telling value whatsoever?
