Nah, it's not that bad. Similar punishment was standard fare in upper class English boarding schools for decades, and the boys were hardly exempted from classes (and sitting still on hardwood seats during them) afterwards. As has been mentioned, the targetting must be good (the restraints are to keep the target from moving and causing a blow to hit where it should not.) But the butt is nicely padded, and there's nothing critical there to damage. Better use some good antibiotic salve on those stripes afterwards, and yeah, you'll be hella sore for a few days. It's a way to create a pretty lasting impression on the consciousness. But it won't send you to the hospital or disable you (barring, as mentioned, a hit in the wrong place.)
