Killer throat - 1/4/2007 9:15:41 AM

I didn't know where to post this, but health seemed like a good place.

This is the second time in two weeks I have had the worst sore throat I have had in years.

I have been taking one claritin a day since last week, I believe.  I have a new bunny and I was allergic and the pills seemed to help.  When I was in the middle of this throat the last week, I missed a day of taking it, then remembered the next day again much later in the day.  My sore throat got better, though didn't totally go away.

I have taken one every day since then again, now my throat is hurting very, very bad again.  There seems to be this film in my throat and it's hard to even swallow.

I am wondering if maybe the claritan could be causing the sore throat by drying it out to the point of being painful, by drying up everything in my body so it doesn't work right.

Most of you know about the bulimia, but even with that.. I never had one this bad before.  While it would contribute, I don't see it would have caused it to get this bad when I have only been sick one time since it hurt this bad last weekend.

Did anyone else have this problem when taking them, or do you know if it could?

I will try not taking them for a few days again, but it would be nice to know if I could pinpoint what it was, so I could have hope it will quit hurting at some point again in my life.

fyi.. I have tried throat sprays, cough drops, salt water, chili powder water...and nothing will even touch the pain.  It also hurts up my ear canal, but I don't seem to have an infection in my ear.

Any help is appreciated.

I think its very important that you call your doctor... Claritin does say that it can come with side effects, but I think if they are that severe you should seek medical help.

Thanks, I appreciate it.  I am new to the area though, and don't have money for a doctor this week.

I guess I am just hoping it's the claritin since it's supposed to dry things up, and maybe I am taking it too often or something.

Are you sure it's a film in your throat and not throat swelling.?  The reason I'm wondering this is because throat swelling can be an allergic reaction,  and a dangerous one at that.

Hmm... I have wondered that a bit.  It feels swollen, but I sort of thought that was the film on it.  If you touch the side of my neck, it's in a lot of pain..it did the same last weekend and then got better.

I guess it's possible I am allergic to claritin.. I am not sure I have ever really taken it.

I will lay off of it for a few days and see what happens.  If it ever gets so I have trouble breathing, I will for sure go to the ER.

Thanks,
Kasha

Yep, my reaction would be to stop taking the claritin, try some rinses or gargles, I don't know what type though, but someone here will be able to tell you what to use.

Sounds like an allergy to me/and that your actual allergies might be making it worse.

Allergy wise in itself, when mine get back they make my ears hurt.  Could possibly be why your ears hurt.  Lay off the claritan, if you are in the position where you can be drowsy, try benadryl (sp?) even if you can only take it at night.  If you are having an allergic reaction to the claritan it should help that a bit as well as your bunny allergies.

See a gen practitioner for another alternative to claritan.  There are a lot of those meds you can take that even without insurance if you buy genertics it shouldn't be very expensive $15-30 a month.  Last time I checked claritian wasn't exactly cheap, I think they add up to about the same amount.

if you do not have the money to go see a dr then go to the er. as i do work in a hospital it does sound like it is an allergic reaction and you do need to see some asap. most hospitals have what they call charity care they will help you pay the bill if not pay all of it. the hospital can not turn you away.

Thank you all a lot.  I am now done taking the claritin and have some benadryl I will take as soon as I know the 24hrs is up on the other.

I have concluded it is swollen and put that with the time I started taking the claritin, so hopefully all will be fine now.

I appreciate all the help.

****Generally speaking****... swelling of the throat or tongue in cases of allergic reaction are not slow and do not go away on their own. It is a sign of anaphylaxis and that is a life threatening event. If the throat swells due to an allergic reaction it will rapidly continue to swell and cut off your air supply. When I say rapidly, I mean a matter of minutes to half an hour ish.

Claritin is an antihistamine, which is a drug used to treat allergies. To have an allergy to antihistamines is extrememly rare. Not unheard of, but highly unlikely.

The symptoms you report are more indicative of strep throat, a sinus infection or some other upper airway infectious process. Do you have a fever? Do you have anyone who can look down your throat to see if it is reddened or has little patches of white? Can you feel your own " neck glands " and see if they are swollen or hard?
The throat pain is what leads me to think it may be strep throat. Does it feel like you are swallowing littel shards of glass when you swallow ? That's another sign.

In any case, I know health insurance is an issue and medical care is not cheap, but it really would behoove you to see an MD. Is there a walk in non emergent medical care center or ambulatory care center near you ? These tend to be less expensive than an MD or ER.
.
Also, antibiotics can be very expensive, as I am sure you know. If you explain to the MD that you do not have prescription coverage and ask him/her to give you a lesser priced but equally effective antibiotic, they are happy to do this.
If by chance it is strep throat, Penicillan or one of it's derivatives is one of the most effective antibiotics on streptococcus bacteria and  they are among the cheapest antibiotics on the market.

Please be aware that infections left untreated can cause serious damage to vital organs and or enter your blood stream which is a very serious condition.

Thank you for all of the helpful info.

It has gone down, the swelling, but it's still a bit sore, not horrible though.  It just feels like it is about to finish healing...

I didn't take the claritin, so I guess that's what it was.  I haven't ever done that with anything else... it was strange and a bit scary.

The only reason I didn't think it was strep, was that the exact same thing happened the weekend before, and then went away when I missed the pill for a day.

Hopefully all is back to normal now, just a bit of rough swallowing, but as bad as it was, it's not very surprising.

You poor baby I hope you feel better.
First bathe the bunny once a week with just water no soap.
It will keep the pet dander down.
I was allergic to cats till I had to live with one too.
I feel for you, but in a month your body should adjust and develop resistances to the little rascel if you're lucky.

Also Extra virgin olive oil is the only ingredient in sweet oil which is used for ear infection and ear discomfort.
Take 1/2tsp of it, pour it in your ear, stuff your ear shut with cotton, then run a blow dryer on your ear for 10 minutes.
It helped my kids immensly when they were little with ear and throat discomfort.

My Mom used to use that when we were little. No blow dryers in those days so she warmed the oil with a spoon and match. Worked like a charm.

if it was strep, you wouldnt be able to miss the white spots in the back of your throat.

sounds exactly like the allergies i had this past summer. i was completely mistified at the time, and nothing made it better. i tried spray, cough drops, had some luck with benadryll. i dont do doctor offices if i can help it, but it did eventually go away.
