I think the idea is not entirely without merit. The same possibility exists for subs; a sub could have a long-term, romantic relationship with a sub and two could seek submission as a couple, or with respective dominant, play-only partners.
I think what would be relevant for how much this possibility could work for a given couple are: (1) their views about play outside the relationship, and (2) how much BDSM is part of their expression of romance and intimacy.
