Status: offline 		How did you learn to identify your style when it came to decorating and furnishing your house?

Do you have a themed bathroom?

I really, really like bare walls, no knick knacky things all over but instead of having a home that looks under-decorated I want to make it look like it was done that way purposely. Turn it into a style but right now it just lacks.

I have tried looking online at interior decorating sites but have not found a really helpful one.

So I would really appreciate any links, ideas or tips you have for turning a house into a home.

Right now the Owner has two completely empty rooms (not bedrooms) that we can't even figure out what to do with. He really doesn't want to buy a dining room table since we would never use it. It seems wasteful of space and money to have something that is just going to sit there and never be used. Though it looks weird with completely empty rooms.

Status: offline 		I have a love of differing styles of decor. I am eclectic, but I also am aware of esthetics when it comes to matching differing styles. I owned an antiques and collectibles shop for a couple of years. It was great fun and taught me a great deal about different eras and styles. If I were just learning about these things I would google a few of the movements such as victorian, art deco, frank lloyd wright, arts and crafts, mission art nouveau to start with. The terms modern and contemporary are not as useful, although if you want to research an interesting movement type in Eames Era... there were some wonderful design elements that have their roots in the 1950s modernism movement.

I have a love of Asian elements, both ornate and simple, right now. But as ever I am very eclectic.

Status: offline 		 One thing you could try is fabric. Instead of painting a wall for color, choose a fabric. Look for a color/type/texture  you like the wall/room  looks dressed up but not cluttered with things handing on it.It can be very simple to very shiek- homey warm or museum-ish

Status: offline 		Have you ever been to Ikea.com? From what you describe you may like their designs.  The clean, spare look. Starting with an empty room can feel intimidating but just start out with something you really like and begin to build around it. I think you are in for some fun

Minimalism with warmth. 

My bedroom was inspired by a pair of capri's believe it or not.  Green and white with a jacquard print.

I tend to go with 2 basic warm OR cool colors, and one bright metallic color to offset with the details.  Thus my bedroom is burgundy and beige, with gold as an accent while my bedroom is mint green and white with silver as an accent.

I have an entire binder separate with tabs for each room with print outs of all my ideas and what I have already.

I don't have any particular interior decorating links, I just go everywhere!  I've literally spent days researching and defining the serving set that I want.

LA I love, love your place the one room with all the bookcases is something I dreamed of but I was thinking of making more of a library with some nice squishy chairs.

After reading through the links provided and some others I definately fall into the minimalist category. The good thing too is I already have the ground work done, there is no clutter.

swtnsparkling, do you mean put the fabric on the walls? I was not sure what you meant.

Right now even the windows have nothing on them.

Did you have the whole room planned out and then went out and then bought the stuff to go in it?

I really admire those people who have a vision and can make it come about , I just seem to be missing that gene :)

Status: offline 		I've always done impulse decorating. 

Mostly, I keep things pretty minimalist, and that supports my sudden urges to do funky arrangements with potatoes and onions or run out to Walmart and get a bunch of bright pink plastic flowers and put them everywhere, or get on e-bay and buy a whole bunch of red things for the kitchen.

The basics are bare bones, and even when I had a house, I kept it that way.  I don't like having a lot of stuff around that I don't use. 

I really like bare walls, with no pictures or anything because then I can stare at them and imagine painting a picture or making a collage or something like that that I could put there.  I have a great imaginary picture in my kitchen that goes perfectly with the red things. :)

Status: offline 		Spend an afternoon at your local megabookstore browsing through the home magazines and the home decorating sections.  Get a latte, sit down with a stack, and see what draws you in and makes you feel comfortable.  Ignore what the perception of "cost" is of doing your home that way - for every high priced room, there's an economical way to do it.

"Sensible Chic" on HGTV is a great show to watch to understand what tricks you can utilize to copy some of the rooms that you like.
