I'm no good at giving advice really on this sort of thing. I know only what I value and how I act and what would work for me or for those I've been close enough to to learn from.
I don't ask my slave what he wants, I don't ask my slave what she desires, because I'm loving or kind (though I guess I am these things). I really am motivated from my own selfish need to have good service. For me part of good service is attitude. An unhappy slave will not have a good attitude in my book.
