The advertisers?  Of course that is what they are looking for, and the poor schmucks that click on the banners.

The site?  Meaning CM?  My -hopeful- ass-umption is that they are just merely trying to keep this site free for us by any means necessary.

GentlehandSTL -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 8:56:22 AM)

There are ads on Collarme.com?

I must have seen them ONCE, but at that time I told the adblock extension to firefox to never show them again.

LadySashayy -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 9:08:52 AM)

I'm going to wade into the fray on this.

Yes Collar.me seems ostensibly free. However, it is based on the eyeballs-and-dollars model, where the site stays free as long as a decent ratio of us are clicking on the ads and following them through to pages on advertisers' websites.

Given then that we as the audience are the commodity that the Collarme.com team are selling to advertisers, I don't see it as a problem to complain about the way in which those ads are offering other services and possibilities to us. I am with julia and the others -- the ads don't speak to me with their false representations of women and so they do become something I just tune out. If more of us start doing that, then fewer people will click, and that will spell doom for this otherwise excellent free site.

Thus, complaining about the ads is a positive thing. It can let the powers-that-be here on the site know that they need to change how they are selling my eyeball power and to whom they are selling it. Want to show me ads from Northbound Leather here in Toronto, or for an upcoming FetCon? Those I'll click on. Show me cheezy obviously fake ads about women wanting to git-with-me, and I'll ignore them.

Simple economics? The new ads make no sense for Collarme.com's financial purpose.

MstrssPassion -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 9:12:17 AM)

{fast reply}

I never see the ads.
When they were first spoken about I had to go looking for them. I came to find out that I had my window set at a size that cropped the section from my view.

Problem solved!

I would like to NOT be assulted by tits, ass and pussy unless I...that is me and myself go looking for it.  I want to read my damn email...thats all.

Assaulted?  Please.  How do the ads prevent you from readng your email?

They don't.  However, they do dictate what time of day I read my email.  As this is NOT a pornograpiic website, I do feel that if I have 20min in the middle of the day to sit at my computer and do anything, I would like to be able to come here and read my email.  Obviously this is not an option right now and I make adjustments.  Because I currently make adjustments, does this mean I should pretend to be happy with the status quo?? No

Do I begrudge them trying to keep their site up and running with minimum cost to themselves and their users?  No  I will say again...I am greatful for this fact, and I ask again...Is this necessary?  I will not pretend to know anything about web developement or what it takes to keep one running sucessfully with little to no cost, but I will ask if using pornagraphic advertising pop ups on the side of my email window is necesssary.  Maybe it is...I dought it, but I have been wrong before.

Taking what is given to you should always be met with gratitude...however that does not mean it should be taken blindly without question.  Questions are the back bone of new idea,  inspire improvement and make it possible.

Take care and Be Cause,

Solinear -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 9:28:58 AM)

In true curiosity, because I had seen the same darned image for the 900th time on... oddly enough, a different name again, I went and signed up for a 'free' account on that site.  I assumed that they do not enforce any level of 'keep the fakers out' and it was simply the same person posting the same image over and over for different locations (or worse, the same location).

What I found out was much more annoying.

1) These users who were supposedly local to me were, actually in far flung areas, nowhere near me.

2) The images were not for the actual user (big suprise when you see someone that's 40+ years old, but the picture is of someone that couldn't be older than 25, probably more like 19).

3) Their site appears to be much more of a 'dating' (find a fuckbuddy?) site that is really a "Hey, pay money for our live porn cams" site.

Honestly, if someone wants to report them for false advertising (for the first 2), the FTC has a $5000 per instance false advertising fine.  If you want to get rid of the porn, simply report them.  They may not be US-based, but they're doing business in the US and much like the offshore gambling sites (that have almost all been shut down or drastically changed), they can be affected by US law.  I'm pretty sure that those in power would love to have any excuse to shut down a porn site (which they are... having personal ads doesn't make you not a porn site - not having live porn cams might though)

Edit:  One other thing... I find their name 'amateurmatch' to be completely hilarious, as they are really all about getting you to pay professionals (the definition of professional is that you get paid to do it) to have sex on the webcam for your entertainment.  They don't care about matching you up to anything other than their professional porncam people.

I really wish they'd start having BDSM, lingerie and similar advertising on the site.  Too often are people looking for lingerie or BDSM gear, I'm sure we'd all love to be able to actually click on a link to something we want to see as opposed to clicking on a link for some false advertising porn site.

gooddogbenji -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 9:44:28 AM)

Or how about this:

One side of CM has thousands of profiles, many fake, many men who are pretending to be women, typing with one hand and the like.  They are being exposed to ads.

The other side, where we live, has a few dozen regular posters, and a few hundred posters at any given time.  This is the group that gives the site credibility as a real site.  No ads here.

It's like the VW group - VW is their bread and butter, but Porsche, Audi and Bugatti show the world what they can really do.

And if we can get what we want on this side, we should maybe thank the people on the other side for paying for it, no?

Yours,

benji

Aine -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 9:49:30 AM)

fargle!

How do you get Firefox to do that??  I'm new to it.

Amaros -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 10:42:50 AM)

I don't even notice them - though I did investigate them at one time, and found it much as Solinear describes. It's more likely that the market is getting saturated with these fuck buddy/webcam sites, and so they're going to extremes to attract traffic. One site I looked at sends me like ten or fifteen emails a day, probobly all written by some mama-san in Indonesia.

Free sites are much more reliable, people have less reason to lie, and the older more established sites like AFF appear more or less legit, but the advertising pays for the free sites, so... what're you gonna do?

Amaros -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 10:46:52 AM)

I have checked out ChristianKink, and it's a decent site, just not a lot of traffic.

Aine -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 11:24:55 AM)

Dangit.....my Mozilla version is too new for it. [:D]

dcnovice -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 1:20:08 PM)

Yeah, and has anyone noticed how fat all the subs in the ads are?

deeddlit -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 1:45:35 PM)

Mine too Aine :(

farglebargle -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 2:08:45 PM)

Oh, then look into adblock plus, I think. Just use your Tools-Addons option, and you should find it there...

Daddyslittlgirl -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 2:19:49 PM)

I am so glad this is finally being acknowledged. The ads are going way too far lately. I know what genitals look like dont need to have em staring in the face everytime i log on.

stef -> RE: the advertising on collarme (1/15/2007 2:27:19 PM)

If they bother you so much, don't look at them.  It's not rocket science.
