I do quite a bit of needle play myself. Here's what I suggest...
A willing vict...I mean...volunteer. Though, you'd need a pretty big bag. (Har-Har)
Needles. Individually packaged, single-use, EO Gas sterilized, tri-bevel hypodermic needles from 18-24 gauge, for human or veterinary use. I also do permanent body piercings, so I pack 16 and 14ga, too. I also have access to diabetic syringes and lancets, which can be great fun also, if you can get ahold of them.
Jewelry. In case I get a request for a permanent modification. I pack 16 and 14ga CBRs, Barbells, Lebret Studs, and Curved Barbells in different lengths and diameters.
Working Surface. I prefer sturdy paper or plastic plates, but have resorted to clean paper towels in the past. Sterile drapes would be cleaner, I'm sure, if you can get your hands on them.
Pretties....Feathers, beads, ribbons...If you're into that sort of thing.
Monofiliment or Fishing Line. If you can find the right size to thread through all your needle sizes, you can use these (after soaked in alcohol, just for fun) to "sew" things closed, things open, things to people, and people to people, as desired.
Corking Material. If I want the subject to wear my handywork for a while, I find it safer to "cork" the ends of the needles, if they're going to be up walking around others or wearing "Pretties". Craft corks work well. I've also used pencil erasers, as Calico mentioned. Or you can save yourself the money and countersink the needles into the skin so as to not be an accidental needle stick hazard for me, them, or others. This can significantly add to the pain, which is always a plus in my book!
Small Sewing Scissors. To cut said monofilament, fishing line, and ribbon. Or just use your SafetyPolice-issued EMT sheers. Matters not.
Paper Towels. No way around these.
Liquid or Gel Hand Sanitizer. For my own piece of mind.
First Aid Kit. Includes different sized band aids, sterile gauze pads, alcohol prep pads, betadine prep pads, an ace bandage, and triple antibiotic ointment.
Rubbing Alcohol (70% or higher). I like to incorporate a lot of alcohol into my needleplay. It helps keep the play clean"er" (cuz the only thing that will probably be sterile is the needle, unless you can get ahold of sterile gloves and sterile everything else), promotes bleeding (if you're into that), and fulfills my want to inflict pain. I keep mine in a small 4 inch tall spray bottle which can be purchased at Wal Mart in the Travel Toiletries area. I also use alcohol prep pads quite a bit to cleanse the area to be pierced. (Alcohol really doesn't do anything but push the germs around, but it makes everyone feel a little bit better, doesn't it?)
Antibacterial Ointment or Cream. I know I meantioned it above, but it's worth mentioning again, I think. I use it as the lubricant for my needles, so that it serves a triple purpose. Keeping the play clean"er", lubing the needle, and for wound aftercare. Alcohol would work also. I've also heard of a sterile lubricant called Surgi-Lube. I've yet to try it, but it came highly recommended to me.
Sharps Container. I'm all for being a responsible citizen and disposing of my needles properly, so I carry a small sharps container in my piercing bag. They're easily attainable at nearly any drug store. You can also get tiny sharps containers called shuttles that are about the size of a cell phone, to save space.
Gloves. I prefer non-powered. (That powder has been speculated to cause cancer). Black in color, so I'm all accessorized and shit. I carry a medium sized box or bag, cuz I like to change gloves often. (Again, keeps the play clean"er".) You can get the plain white ones at Wal Mart for a reasonable price. I'm trying to get my hands on some sterile gloves for other uses, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Calico also brought up a good point about latex allergies. I carry 2 or 3 sets of vinyl or neoprene exam gloves in my bag, just in case.
I lump all my medical play stuff in with my needle play, so I've also been known to carry scalpels, skewers, and skin staplers in my needle play bag as well.
