I am looking for advice on dry eyes and contact lenses. In the past 3 weeks I have scratched my eyes because they are too dry (this has been confirmed by an eye doctor). I am on a regimen of keeping my eyes hydrated while I wear my contacts, to prevent further scratches and to hopefully not give up my contacts. This is a firustrating situation for me as I've worn contacts since junior high (I'm ancient, okay). Does anyone else struggle with this? I do not want to go back to wearing glasses and my eye doc isn't to the point of suggesting that as an option.

Hi Katy,
They sell special eye drops to hydrate eyes of people who wear contacts as this I think is pretty common.
Funny they didn't tell you that at the Doc's office.
I THANK GOD have good vision, but all my friends who wear contacts use hydrating drops (like visene (sp?) for contacts) 4-5 times a day.
Check with your local drug store and if you don't see any specifically for contact wearers ask the pharmacist.

You may have acquired the disease of Sjögren. In that case I strongly recommend that you switch to glasses to lessen the risk of further contamination. Use tissue or toilet paper to clean your eyes, but do not rub. Wash your hands if inadvertently you touch your eyes.

Oh, they did tell me it's a common problem. They also gave me two sets of drops, to use alternating, they are available without a 'script.

I just take mine out for a few days and let things normalize again.

Yep. I've been doing that for the past 3 weeks, but I have to wear my contacts for my part-time job because my glasses 'script is old and won't work for that type of detail work.

Ohhhhh well that sucks. Get yourself new glasses.

And it might be an allergy? My sister can't wear her contacts a few weeks out of the year every year because of it.

I have the same problem.
I use an OTC drop for contacts.

I know the glasses can suck...but I find that if I take a few days off and wear My glasses its not so bad.If its not a sunny day I'll wear My glasses,whenever home I wear them.It really seems to help...the other thing is falling asleep with the reg. contacts in causes My eyes to be irritated all day when I wake up...so for Me its helps to make sure I dont sleep with them in.
Another thing is to make sure they are clean and free of debris,like cat hair,lint,dirt etc.
The new breathable contacts work well as do the ones you can wear overnight,though the overnight ones are expensive,they allow the most air in.

I wear O2 Optix which are supposed to be good for oxygen. I do not so much as nap with them in, because it's like they are glued to my eyes. I'm also careful about how I handle them. I've worn lenses for many years and been through it all...hard lenses, gas permeable, soft lenses that had to be enzymed. I now wear 14 day lenses. I will probably start wearing my glasses for longer periods over the weekends, just to give them a rest. I do a lot of detail, number work and strain my eyes, that may also be contributing to not blinking enough.

I don't wear contacts - can't because my eyes are too dry and sensitive - but I know that eye drops are the best thing in the world, as much as I hate putting them in.

And if your sole purpose is to lubricate the eye, do not get anything that's supposed to "get the red out" because the ingredient that does that dilates the pupil a little and can give people migraines. I speak from experience. Putting the drops in every few hours should be enough to help minimize the bloodshot look.

I have had the same problem. The only thing I have found to work is Aquify solution and drops. I also when off work for a few days dont wear them for a day or two.

I appreciate everyone's input. I think I will give my eyes more breaks from contacts over the weekend.

I wear the same type of lenses you do. What I have done is I wear them for as short of time as possible, put them in in the morning, and when I get home from work, take them out, I also seldom wear them on the weekends. I would keep a bottle of saline solution around as well as the other two bottles of drops. ( I would imagine that the two bottles given you, can only be used so many times per day, whereas the saline solution can be used as often as necessary) Also, be sure you are drinking enough water during the day, and not using any medication such as Sudafed, as that will dry your mucus membranes out a great deal. Hope some of the advice you've gotten helps, I know I would be terribly upset if I had to give up wearing My contacts. Best of luck to you.

i've been wearing contacts since i was 14 y/o. I honestly am terrible with them.

I use the disposable kind - stick them in and then i forget about em. I put saline solution in if they feel extremely dry but i rarely take them out. Unless i'm tossing them. I toss them - just when ever.

Saline solution in the morning is generally the best bet. I let my eyes hydrate them and when they get dry at times my eyes will tear up and hydrate themselves.

On top of that for some odd reason my eyes start to burn massively.. its either some sort of eye allergy or happens when i'm tired.... dunno..... but it makes my eyes water.

I have the same problem. I'm not the ideal candidate for contacts since I don't blink frequently enough. I also live in a very arid climate (which makes for a ton of dust) and noticed while visiting the Caribbean and Costa Rica that my contacts did not bother me at all, even when I wore them for 16 hours at a time. At home, there's just not much I can do. My little humidifier can't compete with the climate. I'm considering laser surgery.

Update

What a difference a few days make. I am putting one drop in each eye; every 2 hours (upon putting contacts in eyes) and immediately before I know I am going to be doing work that may cause eyestrain. No more problems, the scratches are healing. I am using the following on a 2 hour rotation:
