funerals in the african-american community in Chicago is more than a family affair or reunion. the last one i attended had the entire community, co-workers, bossess, church members (old and new), etc there. plus the reception afterwards had a pot-luck style buffet and when i left, more food was still coming. the service was more like a celebration of life than a somber service. a couple of choirs and soloists sang the person's favorite songs, speeches from those who knew him and a short sermon.
