Funerals here, [just came from aunt Helens] are charming small townish.

Where as funerals in chicago- are more upbeat- close to the casket- one is to be quietish. but in the back- and in adjacenet room- it is sorta like a family re-union of sorts.

mom said she wants that upbeat gospel music at hers. [the music is passionate, commen in some african american churches]

sorta interesting.

we left after 40 minutes. the others might not have liked it- but for my grams sanity- mom and i felt it was best. [she is buring her last remaining sibling- so she had to attend- but it haunts her...]

funerals in the african-american community in Chicago is more than a family affair or reunion. the last one i attended had the entire community, co-workers, bossess, church members (old and new), etc there. plus the reception afterwards had a pot-luck style buffet and when i left, more food was still coming.

the service was more like a celebration of life than a somber service. a couple of choirs and soloists sang the person's favorite songs, speeches from those who knew him and a short sermon.

I think the overall service is pretty much up to the deceased.  I've buried many family members and each service was a bit different.  Ranging from somber times to all out parties.

Now, I've noticed in different area's of the country actual cemetaries vary widely.  Some still dig a hole and put the casket or urn right in.
While others demand you use a cement box to put the casket or urn in.

Remember a few years back when they had those floods in North Carolina and caskets were floating down the roads?  I wonder what sort of burial tactic that was?
