'Exotic' boutique in Montclair draws fire for window displays
by Philip Read
The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ)
March 3, 2005

The store window display has scantily clad mannequins surrounded by
floating cutout hearts reading "Hold Me" and "Kiss Me" and "Love Me."

But Montclair residents and township officials are telling the store
owners to "Clean It Up" and "Cease and Desist."

One of the biggest concerns is that the window display is in full view
of children walking to the nearby Glenfield Middle School.

"Clean it up. Clean it up," resident Audrey Fletcher recently urged
officials.

The store's racks contain not only lingerie, made of cotton, vinyl,
latex and leather, but "chains, whips, cuffs," said Frank Leslie, head
of Montclair's department of administration, code enforcement and
environmental affairs, who instructed one of his inspectors to remove
his badge and secretly canvass the store.

Those contents, the township says, classify the store as a sexually
oriented business, and that is a no-no near a school.

Store window displays have caused uproars before in New Jersey.

In Westfield's downtown a few years ago, people got in tizzy over a
Valentine Day's display at Victoria's Secret. One mother equated the
view to that of "an S&M shop."

Residents Appalled Over Sex Convention
by Jacqueline E. Burrell
Ellicott City View (Maryland)
March 2, 2005

Residents who live near the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center say
they're "horrified" that the hotel allowed an alternative lifestyle sex
convention to be held there this past weekend.

Dark Odyssey is the name of the group that sponsored the sex gathering.
Its website describes co-founder, Greg L., as owner of a sex shop
featuring wood and leather paddles as well as floggers - an interest
he's always had, it states.

This event, entitled Dark Odyssey - Winter Fire, was sold out with more
than 300 registered participants. Turf Valley Hotel contains 220 rooms.
Two other area hotels, one listed as two minutes from Turf Valley and
the other 15 minutes away, were for the overflow.

"There are very definitely health issues", said resident Ingrid
Holtzman. "I've seen those news shows where an ultraviolet light exposes
feces and other things in hotel rooms after everything has supposedly
been cleaned. Would you put your baby on a bedspread there after this?"

Holtzman said she'd be reluctant to take her two children to the hotel's
indoor pool or her grandmother to lunch now after reading several
explicit web accounts of past events that include bondage, anal sex, and
kinky sex workshops.

"I'm not prudish. I'm actually a pretty liberal person, but this is not
an appropriate setting for this event at all", she said.

She called it "not very respectful of the community".

Speaking for Turf Valley Hotel, Sam Mangione said: "We don't endorse the
subject matter."

The weekend has passed without incident, he noted. "We accomplished what
we set out to do. The group that came in was private and behaved
appropriately in the public settings of the resort".

Sex on Tuesday: Some Like It Rough
by Sari Eitches (advice and opinion)
The Daily Californian
March 1, 2005

Cal alum Paul Joannides observes, "The United States was originally
settled by a group of religious outcasts, malcontents, criminals and
slaves - the fact that we're not all into some form of bondage is a
little amazing."

But relax your idea of what constitutes sadomasochistic tendencies. If
you include not just getting whipped by a leather-clad dominatrix while
attempting auto-asphyxiation, but also giving your partner a little
hickey during a make-out session, this campus is just crawling with
sadistic heathens. Kind of comforting, actually.

A lot of what would be classified as "Bondage Lite" - furry handcuffs,
silk blindfolds, nipple nibbling, hair pulling and the occasional
doggie-style spanking - has made its way from the fringes of alternative
sexuality to the "Top 10 Ways to Spice Up Your Sex Life" cover story of
Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Montco man admits to stabbing porn actress
by Pamela Lehman
The Morning Call (Allentown, PA)
March 1, 2005

An Eagleville man admitted Monday he stabbed a Canadian porn actress
after a bondage photo shoot because he didn't have the $900 to pay her.

Anthony Frederick, 47, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Court to
stabbing 23-year-old Natel King and leaving her body at the bottom of a
Whitemarsh Township hillside a year ago.

Frederick said he agreed to pay King $900 to shoot bondage photos in the
basement of his Conshohocken studio. Frederick sold adult photos over a
Web site he owned, according to court documents.

He admitted Monday that after shooting about 20 photos of King nude, he
told her he didn't have the money to pay her, Castor said.

Frederick said King threatened him with a knife and when he was able to
wrestle the weapon away, he stabbed her at least six times in the chest,
neck and face, Castor said.

Attorney general says he will prosecute obscenity aggressively
by Mark Sherman
Associated Press (via The San Diego Union Tribune)
February 28, 2005

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Monday he would move aggressively
to prosecute obscenity cases, and he laid out a broader agenda much like
that of his predecessor, John Ashcroft.

In his first lengthy address since becoming attorney general in early
February, Gonzales said people who distribute obscene materials do not
enjoy constitutional guarantees of free speech.

"I am committed to prosecuting these crimes aggressively," he said to a
Washington meeting of the Hoover Institution, a public policy think tank
based at Stanford University.

The Justice Department is appealing the dismissal of an obscenity case
in Pittsburgh in which a federal judge said prosecutors went too far in
trying to block the sale of pornographic movies over the Internet and
through the mail. The case initially was prosecuted under Ashcroft.

Condoleezza Rice's Commanding Clothes
by Robin Givhan
The Washington Post
February 25, 2005

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived at the Wiesbaden Army
Airfield on Wednesday dressed all in black. She was wearing a black
skirt that hit just above the knee, and it was topped with a black coat
that fell to mid-calf. The coat, with its seven gold buttons running
down the front and its band collar, called to mind a Marine's dress
uniform or the "save humanity" ensemble worn by Keanu Reeves in "The
Matrix."

As Rice walked out to greet the troops, the coat blew open in a rather
swashbuckling way to reveal the top of a pair of knee-high boots. The
boots had a high, slender heel that is not particularly practical. But
it is a popular silhouette because it tends to elongate and flatter the
leg. In short, the boots are sexy.

Rice's coat and boots speak of sex and power -- such a volatile
combination, and one that in political circles rarely leads to anything
but scandal. When looking at the image of Rice in Wiesbaden, the mind
searches for ways to put it all into context. It turns to fiction, to
caricature. To shadowy daydreams. Dominatrix! It is as though sex and
power can only co-exist in a fantasy. When a woman combines them in the
real world, stubborn stereotypes have her power devolving into a form
that is purely sexual.

HOW TO WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Feedback letters are an effective way to convey a positive image of
alternate sexual practices such as SM, swinging, or polyamory. You can
help to correct negative social myths and misconceptions about these
types of practices. These letters help achieve the advocacy goals of the
NCSF.

Generally, for a letter to be published, it's important to include your
name (or first initial, last name), city and daytime phone (for
verification only). For more information, see:
http://www.ncsfreedom.org/media/writelettertoeditor.htm

Please alert us to positive, negative or neutral stories about SM,
swinging and polyamory at media @ ncsfreedom.org

National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) is a national organization
committed to altering the political, legal, and social environment in
the U.S. in order to guarantee equal rights for consenting adults who
practice forms of alternative sexual expression. NCSF is primarily
focused on the rights of consenting adults in the SM-leather-fetish,
swing, and polyamory communities, who often face discrimination because
of their sexual expression.
