I'm sitting here, having my saturday night cocktail, and once again, it's a Manhattan... I need to find something new... LOL... One of my past-times is inventing cocktails... I do so enjoy learning about new cocktails and inventing my own.  I also get a kick out of "old" cocktails. My Master also very much appreciates my personal sugar-free take on a Mojito   and I very much enjoy making it for Him.

I have an amateur personal bar in my apartment, and I would love to hear your favorites or obscure recipes or ones you have invented.

One of my favorite summer cocktails is something I always thought was a New England drink... come to find out, it's just because of my mothers' thick Boston accent, no body understood her when she ordered a "Wahd 8"  -- aka for those of you who don't know the accent a "Ward 8"... it's an oldie but a goodie, and thought I'd share...

Ward 8
1 1/2 ounces bourbon whiskey
1/2 ounce lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
1/2 ounce orange juice (fresh squeezed is great!)
1 tsp grenadine
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass

How about you?

A good friend made me some incredible martinis over the summer.
OMG...I got so fucked up on just two of them.  Loved em.

One of my favorite Winter/Holiday Martini recipe for you to try if you'd like... I need vodka, so, can't make it... Well, I don't recommend getting fucked up with these, they are a doozy!

Candy Cane Martini
Ingredients:
Mini Candy Canes (or starlight mints)
Peppermint Schnapps
Vodka
Club Soda or Seltzer (optional)
In a martini shaker filled with ice, pour in about 1 to 2 oz of the Peppermint Schnapps and fill the rest with Vodka... shake well
In a martini glass, splash just a touch of the club soda over your mini candy cane. Strain the martini over that... Enjoy!

This is a favorite... allbeit fattening... yummy and impressive

Irish Cream Liquor (aka Home-made Bailey's)
2 Cups Irish Whiskey (cheap kind) (don't make it fancy -- doesn't taste good, really!)
1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 Cup of Heavy/Whipping Cream
4 Eggs
2 Tbsp Chocolate Syrup
2 Tbsp Instant Coffee
1 tsp Vanilla extract
½ tsp Almond Extract (or Almond liquor like Ameretto)
Place ingredients in order in a blender and blend. Chill well in fridge.

hmm... well for those of us who can't have sugar (for diet or health reasons), but would like a cocktail (without the excuse of the "holidays" to have something really sweet like Baileys) sometimes, sugar-free needs to be done unfortunately -- Rum is bad enough... no need to add that simple syrup... LOL   Besides, equal melts in cold drinks, no need to make it into a "syrup" like you do with sugar. Well, as usual, this is but my opinion... We both quite like it though, alot

If you care to have the recipe, here it is (with the simple syrup/equal alternative):

1 1/2 ounce of light rum
12 mint leaves
1/2 lime
Dash of bitters
Simple Syrup (equal parts of sugar melted w/water) Or 4 packets equal
Club Soda

In a collins (tall) glass, place 12 mint leaves and 1/2 a lime, crush well, but I don't like to break up the mint... Add 2 dashes of bitters. Cover lime with the syrup (or 4 packets of Equal). Fill glass with ice. Add rum and top off with club soda. Stir well and garnish with lime.

For extra Lime flavor: I've been using one packet of True Lime when I add the Equal -- you can find it with the Sugar, great in water too!

Just call this the Sonnetini.....Start with well chilled Grey Goose Vodka over ice in a shaker....add a generous splash each of Gran Marnier and Chambord.  Shake well.   Strain and serve up.  Garnish with an orange wheel.  It's strong but very fruity and good.

Margarita version:    Start with Cuervo 1800 over ice in a shaker....generous splash each Gran Marnier and Chambord....slightly bigger splash sour mix....squeeze of fresh lime juice.   Strain and serve up.

Current favorite:  Appletini's.....3 parts good vodka, 2 parts sour apple schnappes.  Garnish with a cherry.  Bonus points for a cinnamon sugar rim on the glass.  Mmmm.....

A personal favorite.

A real good Bloody Mary

In a beer glass add equal parts
Guiness
Red wine
Tomato juice
Mix well and garnish as a more traditional Blood Mary (worcestshire, celery salt, horseradish etc.). It tastes so much better than it sounds.

White sugar? worse sacrilage then before!

hehe i'm just breaking your balls, my method is a bit different as I use sugar in the raw and grind in the glass with the mint leaves until the mint is completly obliterated (like how you would start with a good mint julep) by the sugar granuales, add in lime juice and grind a bit more, then ice and then I use golden rum instead of white rum (hate the white stuff) stir, then top with sprite or 7-up, stir again, throw in the squeezed out lime.

oh, yes, I forgot, I had a Mojito on my recent vacation with Gold Rum, was SO much better... definitely!

Next time I have people over who aren't on a diet or have dietary restrictions, will use the Sugar in the raw... really do prefer it.

On a side note... a local restaurant here used to serve it with a Sugar Cane stick for you to stir it with... might be an idea for you, you sound like a Mojito enthusiast!

I had a version of this out in Montana...Alaskan pipeline workers were drinking it at ten in the morning so it must be manly.
Light beer (I'm watching the calories)
tomato juice
tabasco
pepper

Sounds disgusting, but sooo good.
Great for a hangover.

Any recipes with absinthe in them?

Walks in scolding everybody!

You do not, simply do not mix Absinthe with anything!!!!!

Here is the proper way to serve Absinthe. It helps if you have an absinthe serving set with the correct glasses and and spoons.

First you pour roughly three ounces of absinthe into a heavy parfait-style stemmed absinthe glass. A perforated absinthe spoon (sometimes very elaborately so) is set upon the rim of the glass and on the spoon is placed a cube of sugar. Ice-cold water is ever so slowly dripped from a glass carafe onto the cube. The sugar dissolves and you continue pouring until the ratio of absinthe to water is about two to five parts, depending upon your taste and fortitude. Give the absinthe drink a spin with the spoon and drink like you dripped - slowly.

For the OP, if you love Manhattens try this one, it is one of Scooters favorites when he does not feel like a Turkey and beer.

Belaying Pin;

Pour one shot of each of the following  over ice in a short fat tumbler and stir gently.

Captain Morgan
Apricot Brandy
Ammaretto
Kahlua
Stoli

I like to mix raspberry vodka with polar orange dry soda. I don't measure, I just count out seconds of pouring on a scale of 1-5 depending on how bad a day I've had.

I like a frozen Roastie Toastie:

Equal parts:
Vodka
Ammaretto
Milk

Toss in a blender with chipped ice and blend until smooth.

I think the real recipe calls for Kahlua also, but I prefer mine this way.
